I have always wondered why they don't put these needles into a more fleshy part of the arm....seems monstrous to put it in the back of the hand......had it done when I was 6 for a tonsillectomy ....couldn't believe it....even at that age.
I REALLY hope that with this new "invite anyone in who is highly skilled" idea they check things out properly.
My experience in the workplace has not filled me with confidence as to the skill level of people from certain countries described as experts...

I looked at his tiny hand, and there wasn't a vein to be seen! . https://www.gosh.nhs.uk/health-professionals/clinical-guidelines/peripheral-venous-cannulation-children
Some stuff here which I just skimmed, and I just might follow it up because, if I don't it will bug me forever, as was an incident with myself and a very serious one with my late sister!
I began typing the history, but won't clutter it up on here, but it was worse than shocking, and at least one person should have been disciplined!

BBC complaining that there aren't enough ethnic minority fire fighters.
WTF is that about? I can understand to some extent the police as they are public facing and interacting but the fire fighters?
Are you going to say "no I don't want my kitchen fire put out as your engine crew doesn't meet my diversity tick box"?

Just Checking • December 20, 2018 1:21 PM GMT BBC complaining that there aren't enough ethnic minority fire fighters.
Is it the BBC complaining or are they reporting that some other body is complaining ? Wouldn't surprise me either way

CAn't remember but they said something about it, I was zoning out probably typing something about Y fronts on here, and then heard that and was ..
Well it's the BBC though isn't it. They could put a "diversity" angle on anything.

Seems to be a wide variation in needle insertion abilities across the medical profession.
I've also had the excruciating pain from a botched needle into the top of the hand - that was from a nurse prepping me before I went under general anaesthesia. Another time, just before an op, the anaesthetist himself prepped me by inserting the needle in the same place on top of the hand - I never felt a thing, nothing.
I'm now nervous of nurses, but never doctors

As somebody who has at least 5 blood tests every year (usually a lot more) that statement is completely the wrong way round - nurse with sharp implement usually fine, doctor with sharp implement (save surgeons obv) then ask when the nurse is free - people who take bloods are phlebotomists anyway. Other than a particular rough phleb in bristol (who happened to be black and English) the colour or race has made no difference to the ability to find a vein, which is down to loads of things at that particular time. Of course, as you all are saying that may well be changing in this post-brexit world as we will have to to recruit god knows who to fill the gaps over the coming years

I too have a fair few each year and, what I will never understand, is that I hardly ever see the same person twice!
I don't look but usually feel between not a lot, and nothing.
Also hardly ever a bruise, except with the one which I have seen three or four times and, I know it's not a social event, but it would be nice to be replied to, in a friendly way, after I have passed a pleasantry!
Not with this sour faced woman and the last time I got her she said I didn't have an appointment, and then the Spanish Inquisition, asking when did I make it, and was I hungry (it was fasting) and still insisting I shouldn't be there!
If I had said I wasn't hungry, she would have sent me home, without any consideration that I might be on a bus or taxi etc.
Anyway, with more surliness, she condescended to do it and it hurt...a lot!
I was seriously cross, and later spoke to the Chief Administrator, about the appointment issue, who said that I did have an appointment, and she had it on the screen!
Later I had the biggest bruise of my entire life which stretched all over the top of my arm and down the sides!
Big mistake by me for not photographing it, especially as when it faded, there were three clear puncture marks...one in the vein and one either side.
Nobody can tell me that was anything but deliberate!
I found out later, from another girl, that I wasn't the only one she upset, and she had been packed off to a York supermarket, where they do tests.
Unfortunately a few months later I was waiting for audiology, and I looked round at the wrong moment, and she caught my eye and with a look of contempt!
Haven't seen her since, but if I get the bad draw I will decline to have her do it.
On a lighter note, another one I only saw the one time, could have been a comedy sketch!
Imagine the manic doctor on "Smokey And The Bandit" and you're not far off!
He had bottle bottom glasses, and somewhat of a shake, and sorry if it sounds far fetched, but I promise you it's true!
I closed my eyes and felt nothing......

The biggest problem with foreign health workers-especially the elderly- is understanding those with heavy accents. My father never understood what they were saying about the many important things that were happening to him.

One babbling Indian doctor, who I had seen before, kept saying he didn't understand about "this confusion".
A meeting was called later with two doctors and some other woman, and Social Disservices, plus my younger sister and I.
Social Disservces woman was late but the Indian doctor kept babbling on about "this confusion".
I'm afraid I just lost it and had to say
"Please let me explain that my sister had a very serious stroke, which we later found was her second, and the police had to break into the house, and she was in a shocking state. She came to you by emergency ambulance, and was crying out about all the colours. Later we discovered that she was sent home, to an empty house at 11:30 PM, and was found the next day, in the kitchen, staring at the wall and shaking and had obviously been there all night, and you say you can't understand the confusion"!
Not the exact words, and interjected by my younger sister, but you should get the drift, as I left out some detail...
Then, get this...the Social Disservices woman arrived, with a case, and a bundle of files that she could barely hold under her arm!
She had the audacity to state that she wasn't familiar with this case!!!
I was still boiling from the earlier happening and, no regrets, she was next in line!
This is very true saddo.....One babbling Indian doctor, who I had seen before, kept saying he didn't understand about "this confusion".A meeting was called later with two doctors and some other woman, and Social Disservices, plus my younger sister an
Leopard, that is ridiculous, as there was nothing I can think of that was in any way offensive, in fact far from it, but to bump yours up as the OP is bad for so many reasons.
I think I will get the whole thing shut down now....

Although a friend had some excellent keyhole surgery performed on her recently. I took the wind out of her sails when I mentioned that she had seen the doctor 25 years ago for the problem, and it was only recently that she was referred to a consultant who spotted the problem.

Might as well soldier on until the thread gets pulled..
My wife was diagnosed with Fibroids, by a young female doctor.
18 months later she was admitted for a hysterectomy and it never was Fibroids... She had two ovarian cysts the size of grapefruits....

People need to stop using "Asian" when they're describing people that are from only the far left corner of Asia, and in most cases come from just 2 or 3 counties.
Seriously, what image pops up in your head when you hear the word Asian ? - I bet its not an Indian or Bangladeshi. Am I right ?

On the subject of doctors (GPs specifically) it is reported that 20% of their income is from prescribing drugs/medication!
This encourages them to prescribe unnecessary, and ineffective products that could even be harmful!
Witness the fact that on my last consultation, with a different GP, he was changing a moisturiser previously prescribed by my usual doctor!
I had a serious reaction to it, which I will be addressing on my next visit, and annoyed with myself for not asking why!
