How far did he have to walk each day for water? Oh yeah, to the tap': Multi-millionaire Lewis Hamilton infuriates home town Stevenage by saying it was dream 'to leave SLUMS' (despite living in six-bed home with four bathrooms)

Formula 1 ace said on stage that it was his family's dream to 'get out of the slums'
The 33-year-old grew up in leafy Stevenage in Hertfordshire, a 1940s new town
The council leader said it was 'disappointing' and people felt 'very offended'
Mocking tweets stream in from residents telling Hamilton 'not to forget his roots'

Lewis Hamilton is today facing a furious backlash after referring to his hometown as a 'slum'.

On stage on Sunday night at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, the Formula 1 driver said it was a dream for his family to 'get out of the slums' - before backtracking to say 'Well, not the slums, but to get out of somewhere and do something.'

The 33-year-old's comments were met with fury on social media, as well as support from fans, but he has yet to comment.

The F1 ace has also been slammed by the family living in his former childhood home who say they are 'shocked' at Hamilton’s attack on the ‘charming and peaceful’ Hertfordshire town.

Needs a visit to Lagos , Mumbai ,Soweto shanty towns for a month...may very well retract his comments

I know Stevenage, or Satanage to their footie opponents, very well. There are some lovely countrified areas like Aston just outside. However like some other of the so called new towns it has been hit by the economy and immigration. The centre, like many other town centres, is not welcoming after the shops shut and darkness arrives. Things are so very different these days with police cuts leading to massive increase in drug dealers and other criminals getting away with it. However, should he feel inclined, no need to visit Lagos or Islamabad, just venture into Tower Hamlets or Newham or walk down the road in which Luton Town FC is situated. No offence meant, jut want to point out there are worse places!

I bet Kenny had an orgasm when he saw this story.

Having lived in Monaco, Stevenage in comparison would be a slum - but he quickly took it back and said  "Well, we would say it's not the slums, but just come out from somewhere and do something. We all set our goals very high but we did it as a team."

Clearly exagerrating to emphasis a point but of course the racists jump all over it. This wouldn't get as much attention if he was white - just like Sterling pointed out with the coverage of him buying his mum a house and Foden, same story, one a negative spin the other positive.

scandi, look at the film of Stevenage from the film in the opening post. That's the England I love, sadly gone, and I make no apologies.

If he felt Stevenage was a slum I just  wonder what he would have called or felt about Pitt Street in Liverpool
Report SlippyBlue December 18, 2018 2:18 PM GMT
I know Stevenage fairly well having lived in North Hertfordshire for 12 years and to describe it as "leafy" is gilding the lily somewhat to put it mildly. There is a retail park there called 'Roaring Meg' where the great unwashed congregate at the weekend, get hammered and beat each other up. Stevenage town centre is a ghastly place, there are nice villages on the outskirts but the town itself is truly appalling and that is me being polite.

have a look at it when you were 2 years old Slippy, in glorious colour with a delightful dolly bird.

The two actors were Christopher Timothy (All Creatures Great And Small) and Barry Evans (the teacher in Mind Your Language). It still looked awful to me even back then but not as bad as it is now. Loads of ferals running amok and not a place I'd ever care to visit again for any reason!
As regards to the cats kenny mann, you are correct in that no corpses were ever found and we think he has done in upto 20 of them, the police were not interested as no proof. The Dad is moving into the downstairs flat in the new year so she can look after him in his his dotage.

I went to see Here we go 3 times in one week with three different young ladies when it first came out. The film was great every time, however the ladies...…………….
I don't like Traffic's music in general but the soundtrack was quite good. Stevie Winwood made a good decision to join Spencer Davis Group instead of staying with Traffic.

Well that's not good enough that no arrests were made, Slippy. Leave it with Inspector Mann.

I loved the film Slicer, the queue at the ABC Ritz, Bradford stretched a long way, particularly on opening night. Loved the music of Traffic. The late Jim Capaldi's brother palys drums with Joe Brown's band who I've seen 3 times in the last 7 years or so.

By the way Spencer Davis is still performing, must be pushing 80 as he was a fair bit older than the others.

I was crazy over Judy Geeson at the time. Delighted to see her get her knockers out briefly, near the end of the film.

I was only in Stevenage (old town) yesterday collecting my place returns from an ew bet on Lewis Hamilton placed in September.  So I know it reasonably well.  Ky kids went/go to school there, same school as Lewis, whom I think was expelled.  It's mainly residential and lacks character, but it's hardly a slum.  One of the poorer places in Hertfordshire, but then Hertfordshire is one of the most affluent counties in England.

I wonder when we started to take offence at the odd word here and there?

Indeed CLYDEBANK, there are some really lovely places in Hertfordshire but Stevenage is certainly not one of them! Our man on here 'nestor' lived in the next village to me in North Herts namely Stotfold and there are quite a few very good golf courses scattered around, Letchworth being one of them and he was a member there I remember him saying on here ages ago. I tried to join as well but they had a 10 year waiting list!
