If you live in London you can get free bus and tube travel when you are 60. But if you are 60 and don't life in a London borough, you don't.
If you like in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland you get a free bus pass when you are 60.
If you like in England, you have to wait till you are retirement age - which for me is another 8 years.
WTF.

I'll be 60 on Sunday (still time to do some crowdfunding
) after which I'll be entitled to free prescriptions obviously as I take 5 tablets a day I am looking forward to that but WHY ? Most people at that age should be working earning a wage and as I've pointed out I'm putting more of a strain on the NHS the same as many many people in this age group.

The freebies for the 60year olds came in under the massive Labour giveaway in their first term after 1997.
It included Pension Credit, Winter Fuel Allowance, Travel Passes and much more.
It was a softener for the working classes to allow them to retire at 60, and make way for the huge numbers about to flood in from the EU and undermine their jobs.
Which was fine until Labour spent all the money.
Then the Tories had to start clawing the giveaways back when they got it.

The problem I think is the word 'free' which the Scottish Govt loves to bandy about, in fact
it costs taxpayers circa £4 million a week. There are professional people and MSPs on high
salaries who qualify for free bus travel !!

Also 60 in Merseyside. I live 14 miles outside so have to wait until 66. Crazy, should be same for all.
I agree, it should be the same for all no matter where you live.

Using a travel pass on the trains removes the hassle of getting on the train that's set out on a cheap ticket.
They just get on the next one that comes. There's no booking to bother about either.
Pure convenience.

I would imagine that free travel in London would be a massive perk, with the cost of transport there.
It does seem unfair that the only over 60's that appear to be paying for public transport are those in England who do
not live in London and maybe some metropolitan boroughs - although I see not the West Midlands.
Also, pretty sure that , begin between 25 and 60 I am one of the few paying full train fares.
And, when they ask me at the pharmacy if I pay for my prescriptions, I answer 'yes' I am in the minority again.
Could someone give me a fecking break please.

Have put the freedom pass up here before free travel on transport for 60 and over

I got mine on Monday, having turned 60 last month. Used it for the first time on Wednesday when I went to a function in Southwark. Four buses and two trains. Saved about £12. I'm in favour!
