My 70+ year old parents got a water meter fitted 12 months ago after I discovered their water bill was £110 a month!!

Now 12 months later its £25 a month as it shows how much they actually use, Yorkshire Water gave them a refund of £250 as I complained of overcharging but now time has passed and I see how little they use I am fuming as they have spent £10k+ on water they never used.

Have I got a case to chase here?

If they live in a block or terrace of like properties, Yorkshire Water would certainly have known that your parents were being vastly overcharged for a decade.
Any neighbours (especially metered) willing to share the information on their water-bills would help your case but where then best to take your complaint I'm not so sure.
Good luck and please keep us informed.

Thanks, looking at the money savings forum not good...they should have got a water meter they would say, sigh.

Btw, I wouldn't take the advice from the link to heart. Given the huge difference between bills, there is no way Yorkshire Water didn't know of the disparity between bills going to neighbouring properties. It's just not fair.

Don't be discouraged by the comments on the moneysavingexpert link; they are just opinions of some random punters on social media.

Maybe..Ask Yorkshire Water for historical records of your parents' neighbours' water bills, for comparison. They won't give them to you. Tell them you have them anyway (metered bills best) and ask them how they justify the disparity. Cc your MP. After Yorkshire Water, assuming they don't resolve your complaint, you may refer the matter to CCWater.

^ Bang on above by UB, your parents paid £110 a month in good faith as that what was asked of them, now it is measured and the true worth  is billed it certainly isn't your parents fault, you have a moral case to persue, how can they(YW) not hold their hands up?

My water bill is less than £250 a year metered, Cant imagine a massive family having a bill over £500 and £25 a month seems step for an old couple, unless they have a swimming pool and like watering the garden 24/7.
