The fan could argue he was eating his nana, was angry at the goal, then the celebration and threw the remains forthwith. |

It may not have been motivated by racism and isn't as bad as throwing coins but was nevertheles a stupid and cowardly act.

The late great Laurie Cunningham, Viv Anderson and others had the right idea. Eat the banana with a smile and treat any possible racist or religious slur with the contempt it deserves. No need for media hand wringers anxious to sell papers. Bobby Moore had the right idea too. Insulting songs in his direction were greeted with a smile and wave of the orchestra conductor's baton. Why the breast beating fuss?

this stuff is going too far - now we are sexist for asking a pretty blonde girl in a short dress, looking quite delicious, if she twerks. UPROAR. I thought she looked good. What would happen if a girl asked Modric if he twerked would there be uproar. I hear so called 'sexist' statements and innuendo all the time on the box and radio - directed at men nudge nudge - never a murmur about that - it is BANTER - people need to grow up. All the furore on sky sports and than bashing on about how good female soccerball is which is not. Have any of you watched one of their games?? I am a fan of womens' rugby though - a different game to the men but very enthusiastic (and they SWEAR too!!!). The commentators routinely apologise for it and makes me laugh. |

No, Hanx. The point I would have thought is by throwing a banana at a black player is the action you would do if you were feeding a monkey; you wouldn't ever have any reason to throw a banana skin at a monkey. I agree with Moisok, throwing a banana at a black player - disgustingly racist, throwing a banana skin at a black player - meaningless in itself.

The lifelong Spurs fan and grandfather-of-two told The Sun Online he picked up banana skin after a child had finished eating it - and threw it without thinking about the racial implications. "The Arsenal player was gloating in front of the away fans. He came up towards the away fans about 10m away and he is basically nodding his head and clapping at us. "Without thinking, I picked up this banana skin from the ground and threw it on the edge of the pitch. I didn’t throw it at the players. It was just on the edge of the pitch. "I am not condoning what I did and I regret it already." Mr Panteli said he intended to plead guilty to throwing a missile on the pitch when he appears at Highbury Corner magistrates court on December 18. After phoning club bosses to apologise, he was slapped with a lifetime ban from Spurs matches - meaning he will miss the new stadium's long-awaited opening next year. He added: "The police were happy to say it was not racism. - A lifetime ban is a disgrace. |

The Spuds board have shown great clemency by giving him a lifetime ban, he could have been punished a lot further and been given a ban of just a few matches.
