is british rail the only format available for a nationalised railway?

surely there are some decent railways owned by the state that operate
a decent system at a reasonable price.

they are forever carrying out upgrades, repair works and subsequent delays/cancelations follow whilst the cost is passed onto fare payers every January.

Why is it in Europe Rail travel is so much smoother, so much more reliable and generally cheaper?

Did London to Liverpool a couple of weeks ago.

Didn't fancy paying over £150 for the privilege so cut my plans a bit short to get the cheaper afternoon train. Unfortunately I only got there 10 minutes before it left and every single seat was taken. Ended up stood outside the toilet trying to eat an M&S sandwich to the soothing sounds of someone dropping their guts three feet away from me. Value for money.

British Rail did pay its way at one time, which was when they handled a lot of freight.
Buying tickets under BR was much better than it is now. but I can't remember anything else being better
Except the number of different routes available.

Any industry should be better under public ownership except they never are.
