Simple answer to a brilliant question: the poor wouldn't pick the fruit.
I should think 70%+ of apples growing in peoples' gardens are thrown. I work in places where it's more like 95%. The same areas that have foodbanks. Not once has a poor person knocked on the door and asked for the fruit which would be gladly given. |

If you planted that many in a clustered, compact area they'd converge and the necessary sunlight needed would be reduced, also need the right temperature.
it a no no in such built up areas because of Elf and Safety concerns with fruit dropping on people's bonces. frost / cold damage to certain fruits would make it a no goer as well. |

There must be hybrids that are short and bush like that can withstand the weather for parks. Probably right INJ laziness.

Wasps only eat apples after they've gone very soft. After they've ripened.

somehow I don't think wasps would survive too long in the cold.

tesco and sainsburys would chop em down!
there are hazelnut trees and numerous fruit bushes growing wild beside us...always popular ... i guess fruit trees were not planted as their wood wasnt the right sort and fruit growers kept their trees under tight control greece was littered with figs, almonds and walnuts when i was there this summer, and little interest from the public...but roadside sellers were doing a great trade. |
