Overall UK net migration figures have remained steady at 273,000 despite a dip in EU arrivals, official figures have shown. EU net migration, the difference between the number of people coming to live in the UK for at least 12 months and those leaving, was 74,000 in the year to the end of June 2018. The Office for National Statistics says this is the lowest level since 2012. The government wants to cut overall net migration to below 100,000. Some 219,000 EU citizens arrived in the UK, as 145,000 left. The data also shows non-EU net migration was the highest since 2004, with 248,000 more non-EU citizens arriving than leaving the UK.
The ONS said there had been an increase in the immigration of Asian, particularly south Asian, citizens coming to the UK over the last year for work-related reasons.
