How can any charity refuse funds from anyone let alone a gambling firm?. People starving on the streets yet I have been told that a homeless charity doesn't want to be associated with a gambling firm.

It`s a fair point but a lot of people are homeless due to gambling.
Report Inspired November 27, 2018 12:27 PM GMT
So if a tobacco company say offer a million pound to a cancer charity they should really refuse?.
Report themightymac November 27, 2018 12:34 PM GMT
Same scenario.
Report themightymac November 27, 2018 12:36 PM GMT
You make a fair point and tbh I don`t have the answer. It`s a tricky situation.
Report donny osmond November 27, 2018 12:36 PM GMT
surely the gambling firm can find another homeless charity to give their money to

everybody would then be happy

When the FOBT bubble bursts they can show how much they care and turn their empty shops in to shelters.

People choose to gamble or smoke

What is wrong with gambling

Charity is charity, they should take it.

We would not not be able to post on here but for gambling..

erm...is that a pro for gamblingLaugh
Report TheBaron November 27, 2018 2:30 PM GMT
yeah gambling's got a lot to answer for.
Report UBLE/REGY November 27, 2018 2:32 PM GMT
Torrid just pipped by Lord of the Rock....erm I chose the wrong one

I see the problem with gambling now
Report UBLE/REGY November 27, 2018 2:37 PM GMT
It is choice, it is interesting as long as we have control

You cannot say it is wrong for everyone, because a few cannot

On that basis we should stop easting...look at those 600lb plus people
Report UBLE/REGY November 27, 2018 2:38 PM GMT
Still homeless charity's can refuse charity if they want...choice
Report themightymac November 27, 2018 2:46 PM GMT
Gambling starts as a choice but it can quickly become an addiction. I`ve seen suicides, marriage break ups, family fall outs, jail and homelessness all because of gambling.
Report TheBaron November 27, 2018 2:47 PM GMT
...hopefully you're back on track now.

Report Dr Crippen November 27, 2018 2:50 PM GMT
The charity obviously doesn't want to feel obliged to the gabling firm, who would be seeking to exert influence over any campaign the charity might conduct against gambling.

I'd reverse the deregulation of adverts tomorrow. Far too many kids think they have to bet on sport to enjoy it. That's very sad.

Betting should be for pros like us Cool

No seriously, betting shouldn't be encouraged. It's far too dangerous. The charity is making a stand. I know it's a moral minefield but you have to start somewhere.

Do the major bookies care? Or is the slogan, "When The Fun Stops, Stop", just them keeping in line with legislation? imo they don`t care and take everything from you.

You ever notice that when you are winning and make a withdrawal, they never give you the money straight away. Could pay you instantly but no they hold on to it and constantly remind you that you can cancel your withdrawal every time you log on. Also, when you have a good run and have a big balance, they keep sending spam by email trying to entice you on to their online Casinos. Personally, I never fall for it but I bet you my last dollar that there are many who do.

Major betting firms have no scruples whatsoever. If you win consistently they limit you or ban you. One major company won`t give me any more than 34p a unit. Others shut you down.

Back to the original question, if major bookies are giving money to homeless it must be as a publicity stunt. It would cost them a lot more to advertise. Should the charities accept it - well perhaps they should. Nose, spite, face etc.

They could fear a conflict of interest, may be a reason?

Dr Crippen already posted that, yes not bad Baron

Betting and gaming adverts should never have been allowed on mainstream media and mobile phones, period.

I tried to give £300 about five years ago to Bromley Citizens' Advice Bureau and they turned it down from me as I am a bookmaker and despite them admitting they were hard up and desperate for contributions. I would NEVER offer to give them a penny again in the future! Funnily enough, I don't think the gambling charities really need any more money than they have already as they appear awash, unless they want to spend even more than they do already, expensively wining and dining the bigwigs that work for the multiples.

pixie were you a bookie at reading dog track back in the day?
Report pixie November 29, 2018 4:07 PM GMT
No, but was a regular punter down there most Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights as a punter in the 90s whilst managing a betting shop for Jack Taylor before the advent of night racing and Fobts.
