My mate says he is smoking about 40 per day. He had to have 3 stents fitted a few years ago after a heart attack - was advised to stop smoking but never did. Not in good health at the moment and I think he's being fatalistic and doesn't see the point of giving them up after smoking for 65yrs. Currently he's spending about £25 per day.
I guess he has a point, crystalhunt. If he's ill and old, being fatalistic is an understandable response. Perhaps if he could see a (non health) reason for stopping, like something to look forward to, it might make him reconsider?

Too far gone I think SF - lives alone - doesn't go out much and recently gave up golf and fishing because of his health. We try to get him out but it's hard to motivate him. Less and less to look forward to.

65 and smokes 40 a day? Obviously not a betting man then as the odds are stacked against him....although he's probably right about the damage being already done. You risk never goes down to that of a non-smoker, even if you quit whilst young.

Badgered my mum for 25 years about smoking, she had a stroke and was even smoking on the stroke ward over 25 years ago made me very angry, then 18 months ago terminal lung cancer..She packed in when diagnosed,i still don't know for sure she doesn't have cigarettes but it's sickening too see,her father died of stomach cancer as well smoked 50 a day,was most shocking thing i've ever seeb especially at the end.Another crazy thing is my dad he's been an on and off smoker, don't think he's addicted he just gets bored or stressed and started again on the vapours since mum was diagnosed, again been badgering him just won't listen.I smoked for 22 years, don;'t think you realize the benefits and how ridiculous it is till you pack in doesn't matter he's 65,stop smoking he'd feel 100% better...

He's been smoking for about 65yrs - he's actually 78. Probably done well to live this long, but not a very good quality of life.

My dad was born in 1941 and smoked 50 a day started at 12, such a bad era to be born as it was in your face that it was cool to smoke. Today it's just changed from cigs to cocaine.
My dad got throat cancer at 60 beat it but lost his voice still smoked and died aged 65 from pneumonia (weak lungs damaged done) I started at 12 and smoked for 15 years (30 a day) still suffer with bad colds every year, you can't undo the damage you can only halt it.
Only reason I stopped I had a collapsed lung and was in hospital for 3 weeks on the lung ward, every young smoker should visit these wards, never forgot how many old people were gasping for air all down to smoking

My mum started at 13 and died of cancer of the Oesophagus aged 57, 21 years ago, always wanted grandkids, but died just before my daughters first birthday,at least she saw her for a few months, but she's missed so much, watching them grow up etc etc , all because of smoking, once she was told it was terminal, she just carried on smoking, there wasn't any point packing up then, it was terrible to see, she must have weighed 4 stone when she died, My brother smoked 30 a day from 15 until 50, been on the vapes for the past 3 years, But my dad started smoking at 14 until he was 75, he was also a heavy drinker but stopped that at 75 as well, after he fell over at home,on hes own and couldn't remember anything as he was p1ssed. Hes 82 soon and as fit as a fiddle, walks everwhere and lives right on the coast, the other side of his flat is the sea, so perhaps thats given him extra time, The point i'm trying to make is that it's never too late to stop, even if it gives you another couple of years, Life is precious.

I just usually buy rolling tobacco that lasts me for many weeks.

Worst thing they did was get rid of the 10 packs. Person buying 10 now has to buy 20.
It would have made more sense to get rid of the 20 packs and person buying 20 would only buy 10.
It`s so simple.

Most people on here of a certain age probably spent their entire lifes in smoke filled Pubs and Betting Shops and passive smoking is just as bad for overall health.

I smoke roughly 20 a week since the smoking ban in Pubs. No way in this world will I stand out on the street smoking. They all look so pathetic doing so.

Smoking should be banned in Britain, I don't know the costs but, I would imagine however much income the government gains from Tax from this dirty habit, is probably outweighed by the cost to the NHS of treating smoking related diseases ? or not far off idk.
Either way it's more of a moral issue, of course the cranky old smokers will cry nanny state but as far as I see it's a good thing in this case.
Probably too radical an idea though, maybe more to the point it'd create a huge black market. Rock and a hard place

@Scandi I was thinking of people in average wage paid jobs. Even 20 a day taking a fair percent of their net wages. Spot on with the rock etc so will not be banned in the near future.

Many smoke tobacco now; far cheaper, £2-£3 per day max I reckon.
I also believe that the ban in pubs led (or is leading to) their demise.
Many are against smoking and I have no problem with this; it is a filthy habit and one I'm struggling to come to terms with (drink was easy by comparison), but I still feel that each town/borough/city should have a designated number of smoking pubs. If you don't smoke you don't have to go there but I would guarantee it would be filled with smokers AND non-smokers

Designated smoking pubs will never happen - not a good idea IMO. What about the staff, health and safety etc.

I gave up with surprisingly little problem about 8 years ago having averaged at least 20 a day for over 40 years and haven't had nicotine in any form since. This idea that smoking costs the NHS.state is laughable though. Smokers die early,non-smokers linger on and get all sorts of diseases eventually and draw pensions much longer.

not really laughable until we really know the actual figures.
Not just what smokers cost the NHS but the damage in passive smoking as well - and then there's the cleaning of those cigarette butts and damage to teeth.

I'm sorry but non-smokers are going to die eventually and most of them won't go on in perfectly healthy fashion until they are 90 and then drop dead in bed. And then there are pensions paid out for much longer to non-smokers presumably. The figures I have seen never give the whole picture. I no longer have any interest in pushing the rights of smokers but I do like a bit of logic.

You really can't trust figures on passive smoking. If somebody presents with lung cancer and says they have never smoked but have worked/lived in a smokey environment they get a lot more sympathy (and better treatment ? ) than if they admit to being an inveterate smoker. But how do you tell so-called passive smoker wasn't an active smoker in years gone by ?
