The Interrogation of Tony Martin - ch4 9pm

Drama recreating the police interviews with the farmer who fired at a teenage burglar fleeing his home with a shotgun, the intruder being found dead the following day.

The case divided public opinion, with Martin seen as a dangerous vigilante and as a vulnerable man trying to protect himself.

The programme recreates the three days of interviews the police conducted with Martin following his arrest for murder, recreated verbatim from the original transcripts. Starring Steve Pemberton, Daniel Mays and Stuart Graham

blokes a hero nobody invited the bloody burglar round everybody should be able to protect their property.

from what i remember it certainly did not divide public opinion. there was outrage when he was originally convicted of murder

A definite oddball, by his own admission.

There's such a thing as proportionality and also the testing of evidence in a court of law, away from the baleful influence of 'the mob' (for which read, newspapers, social media(nowadays) and knee-jerk reactionaries).

The burglars should not have been there - and there are laws to deal with what they were up to, but Martin was found to be a liar (vis-a-vis where he claimed to be standing when he fired the shots). He also seemed to revel in the role of vigilante in the rather chilling endpiece to the programme.

The legal system probably got it about right.

If the Scum wasn't in his property, they'd be alive today, maybe.
If someone entered my property illegally with me,my wife and kids inside.
Either me or the trespasser would end up in prison.

There used to be, plod don't even turn up to burglaries these days.

May gets rid of 20,000 police - and shock horror, crime goes through the roof.

True, mind you, shipping in millions of newcomers from less lawful cultures was never going to help in that respect, was it.

Friend of mine used to say that the only mistake he made was not shooting both the intruders,

cannot believe that anyone can defend burglars entering dwelling houses or soft in the head enough to believe the law will ensure they get their just desserts this government does not believe in proper sentencing it costs money to imprison them, some poor old pensioners get badly beaten up having survived a world war and left wing loonies support soft sentencing for these poor misunderstood souls ----my tin hat.

i think if somebody enters your house unlawfully, they give up the right to be lawfully protected.
The same as if somebody goes to another country to fight for Isis  against our own soldiers or to train to fight for Isis,
they lose there citizenship and have there British passport taken away.

the old bill have said today they could let violent crims go ,risk assesment and all that !  if the government are prepared to send em out undermanned to save a few quid then what do they  expect !crime to fall ?  after all it dont affect mps and the like they are well protected ,fook it the ordinary man is cannon fodder !

Strange one isn't it. If you defend yourself you're probably concious when they eventually turn up there's a good chance you might yourself be put through the mill as they try hard to do you for it. Then seem to suggest if THEY are needing defended we should go to their defence!
