Who would they be prepping against? The Russians, perhaps the Americans? Or maybe a former Eastern block country that is now part of The EU and is fed-up with the likes of Germany and France monopolising power.

They already had the beginnings of a European Army with volunteer units integrated in the Waffen SS. The British Free Corps, initially called the Legion Of St George, was one of the foreign units.
