Can't believe it's on the TV so soon. Either the beeb has shelled out to get it, or it's been a labour of love for Jackson who's get relatively little money for it.

Have been wanting to see this at the Cinema, but is not on anywhere within a 30 mile radius.
A bit of a disgrace imo
Looking forward to it.

VERY much looking forward to this, the clips I've seen are amazing.

And yes I think it was a labour of love, he wasn't in it for the money.

He talks about it in an interview on youtube.

It's unimaginable.
It makes me wonder if there was big interest in the arms trade back then.

Did many people who went 2over the top" escape unharmed to the end of the war?

Jackson is a genius film maker. Magnificent.

The last few minutes speaks volumes. Those poor, poor men.

Life is so cheap, the reality of what happens in war is kept away from those not fighting, if not  - then the warmongers and psychopaths who send people to die wouldn't be able to do it so readily.

You would thought that they could've had the end of the war celebrations in colour.

I've been checking my local flix for this. Had no idea it's gone straight to TV.Shocked

Many thanks for the heads up. Will watch it on catch up.

A staggering production.

What comes across is that wars are not fought between armies, but between politicians.

No wonder this was sent straight to tv. The true messages that come from this are not palatable to the powers that be, including the royal family.

Watched that one last night about PTSD  was very revealing and shocking too
Report Baphornet November 13, 2018 8:24 PM GMT
Injera: this particular war was started by and over inbred royals and imperialism. As usual the cannon fodder was brave men whilst these bushy moustached (and thats just the women) layabouts watched from afar.
My heart nearly broke watching this as i felt as if i was intruding in some way.

Interesting part for me echoed what my Grandad, who survived Passchendaele said, it was that they thought they should be fighting with the Germans against the French!  First time I've heard anyone else say it.
Report Jack Hacksaw November 14, 2018 11:08 AM GMT
IMO the Dan Snow programme never really explained why the troops suffered different symptoms during WW1 (shell shock) and  WW2 and more recent warfare...(PTSD).

Not on the same level, TheBaron but my great-grandad came back with a tale that resonated with my family for many many years. Namely that the French villagers-natives actually charged the Brits for water!

Baphornet - "Not on the same level, TheBaron but my great-grandad came back with a tale that resonated with my family for many many years. Namely that the French villagers-natives actually charged the Brits for water!"

It would be reasonable to assume that many French (and Belgian) villagers had had their ability to grow their own food made impossible by bombing and shelling. The British Army had access to large quantities of tinned and other food.  I do not think it unreasonable that any French family with access to clean water would not at least attempt to do a "deal", or even sell their valuable commodity.  Always dangerous to apply today's sensitivities to this time, as the film eloquently showed.
Report Baphornet November 14, 2018 1:40 PM GMT
Sorry but i can't agree, Blackbarn. And it has nothing to do with todays "sensitivities" to which you refer
Report blackbarn November 14, 2018 1:48 PM GMT
Not looking for agreement!  Merely raising some probable background to the incident you describe.  Today's sensitivities would obviously condemn selling of water to troops, my point was to provide possible context for that action.
