Absolute menace. Already cause havoc in prisons but will surely soon be used by criminals to kill people - the military have been using them for that purpose for years

yes, you are the sage of the forum.
there's no reason to have a drone apart from police, cartographers  etc. privately i can expect jeremy clarkson type people owning them, minimum 10 year jail sentence for misuse will sort it out.

Anybody can buy a drone without any checks. Terrorists, criminals, lunatics and Clarkson types (as mentioned ) not excluded. And apparently you can't trace where they are being operated from ffs.

The report I heard about an hour or so ago said that drones that could stay up all night were in some stage of development by the military and their contractors. So either somebody has gone rogue or there are numerous drones being continually replaced. The fact that nobody seems to know shows the madness that has allowed these things to go essentially unregulated for so long.

As with guns and unruly dogs PEOPLE are the problem here.
Drones now being used in search and rescue and various other uses can be beneficial I would have thought.

Whatever happened to the police drone that was being utilised in the vicinity of the King Power on the evening that the Leicester City chairman and three others were killed ? Confused

There's an hilarious side to this, in the fact that security services and the police have become so  ineffective that a major airport can be disrupted as easily as it has.
Didn't the authorities anticipate a situation like this?
Are they paid to drink tea or what?

The country is run by fools at every level.

Reynard, I think it has already been disclosed the kingpower helicopter had a
Tail rotor malfunction.
There was In fact a video on TV showing a large piece of the rotor flying off just after take off.
By:
Reynard
When: 20 Dec 18 09:52
So what struck the helicopter to cause parts of the tail rotor to break away ? If it was a simple mechanical malfunction it would simply have failed , rather than disintegrating .

Interesting you use the word 'disclosed' , Glasgow . The cause of the Hillsborough tragedy was disclosed and many years later found to be a lie , instigated by the police to cover up their own failures . There are many recent examples of police covering up crimes in order to protect certain individuals and groups who have carried out organised crimes spanning many decades . It wouldn't take too much effort to conceal the true cause of the King Power helicopter crash in order to clear those responsible from having any blame attached , even if accidental .

dave1357 - you continue to make the mistake of believing everything you're told 'officially' even though recent history is littered with examples of judicial corruption .

I would accept that drones could be used by certain bodies for specific purposes. The Army and police and a few other entities have firearms but if you or I are found wondering down the street carrying one for no particular reason,we are in serious trouble even if we have never used it. Same should apply to drones imo.

from the tail rotor area. wether it was poor maintenance or something more suspicious i dont know !!

What i DO KNOW is it wasnt a drone.

Everyone seems to be shocked, angry with pitchforks at the ready (Daily Mail thread is equating flying a drone to an act of terrorism)

I've never had a drone or intend to get one, but I enjoy YouTube videos of the peaceful aerial footage of my local coastline
They've been around 10 years and I don't recall one serious incident from them.

Yet I feel now, hundreds and thousands of pounds are going to be wasted on commissioned reports, legislation, mobilising police and security forces and legal matters.

99.9% of it for the public, seems like a harmless hobby. There's barely any videos of them being misused or voyeuristically peering into people's homes and gardens.

Yet another topic that will be headlines in the news and social media. Everyone will be indignant.
And in two months there will be topics asking 'Whatever happened to all that furore over Drones?'

Poppydog.
We KNOW drones are routinely used to fly contraband into gaols. I accept that drones are usually used responsibly. So were small arms prior to Dunblane but they were rightly banned afterwards causing a certain inconvenience to some but for the greater good of all.
I have said above there will be specific uses for which accredited bodies could be licenced but any Tom,Dick or Harriet being able to use them for "recreational purposes" is just silly given that they are potentially lethal as well as being a bloody nuisance.

I fly drones commercially, doing stills, video and survey data. I can’t help but think this is an orchestrated stunt. Flying a drone at night is a real challenge and a big no no without enhanced permissions from the CAA. Flying a drone at night, in the rain!? I’m amazed anything could stay up in this current weather we’ve had in the last hour. Hopefully they find the guys and they get some prosecuted.
---------------------------
This whole story is quite bizarre.

A Gatwick spokesperson just said at 7a.m. they can still see drones, and except for a brief 30 minute period, there has been drones over the perimeter fence the whole time.

So:

Who would be mad enough to fly drones over an airport?
...in the dark?
...in the rain?
...continue literally all night.
...not be scared off when the airport closed?
...not be found by the police who are apparently "scouring the neighbourhood"?
How long does a drone battery last anyhow? There must be a while airforce of them, being switched when they need re-charging?
Something really doesn't add-up here.

----------------------------
The most expensive ones will only just reach the 30 minute mark in ideal conditions, and the batteries take over an hour to recharge. For one drone to remain flying for that length of time would require the operator to be in the immediate vicinity to swap batteries several times an hour, and they'd probably need between 4 and 8 batteries.

I'm not ready to call it a conspiracy but that's some dedication to being a dckhead.

--------------------
yeah my DJI Mavic 2 Pro flies for just 30 mins, each battery costs £129 and thats the top of the line kind of flight time, with bad weather you get loads less. you have to be dedicated to be doing this and have a **** load of batteries. My guess is its some form of protest.

Also why doesn't the airport have drone countermeasures

The police stationed nearby should be like the RAF regiment, and trained specifically for this sort of thing.

The drones will be controlled and if a drone can see the transmitter signal why don't the police just have a direction finder for it? It'll very probably be on the standard frequency, 2.4ghz if I'm right. Pop out two guys [1] with 2 direction finders and you can find out where the controller is in minutes? FFS the Germans could do that to find resistance radios in France 7 years ago.

[1] Or people of any other gender. Like a female santa.

Modern drones are apparently sold with some sort of system which prevents them from flying near an airport, but that can be over-ridden by somebody who knows what they are doing with the software.
The lack of proper regulation of these things is quite extraordinary.
By:

When: 20 Dec 18 11:41
Given this could shut down an RAF base as well the RAF Regiment should be capable of same thing anyway, I hope they're considering it. In fact just train them up and have a few on call near major airports to stick an SA80 into the face of whichever d1ckhead does this sort of thing. I'm sure a direction finder is a trivial thing to create. £50 quid and a bluetooth link to a phone app..

By:

ACtually given they can be a bit autonomous maybe they could be sent and then transmitter switched off...
But there must be some things they could do, fight technology with technology.

If autonomouss they'll work on GPS and you can f/k that right up using a directional beam.

I loved the idiots the other day who recorded themself setting up a drone to take stuff into a prison and then it got caught and had the film of them on it :)

Oh Jesus. Some stupid person who is apparently a minister in this shambles of a government has just stood up in the House of Lords and said they are going to make everybody who buys a drone take an a safety check.Online !!!
It is interesting that it seems we should spend billions on anti-drone technology so Poppydog can continue to enjoy his Youtube videos. This country is quite mad.

I see the police are now throwing themselves on the mercy of the public asking them to get in touch if they know anything.
I am amazed they can't track this or destroy it. One assumes whoever is responsible for this is trying to cause maximum disruption but not actually kill people. One can only imagine if terrorists started using these lethal weapons.
By:

When: 20 Dec 18 12:24
They are directable by people with very limited training and can even carry a payload. They are almost designed to be weapons.

They've been used in Syria etc and there was one apparently used in Venezuela a few weeks ago.

All this nonsense about our sky filled with heavy load carrying drones from amazon etc, total boll0x imho. Would you want a drone carrying a parcel to fall on your head or come crashing through your window? Fall on a road and cause a swerve or hard brake and a car accident?

By process of elimination...

Isis/ al Qaeda/ isil, don't exist anymore..mr trump said so
Britain First, national front or whatever they go by are too thick to doing anything naughty unless in a big group
Which just leaves...The Russians...been blamed for just about everything else this year so why not?

Or it could all be a load of rubbish, intentionally done to bring in new laws to keep us " safe"
By:

When: 20 Dec 18 12:33
I should have added Amazon to my list of undesirables who can get hold of the things without any checks.
I agree it would be madness if they started delivering using drones, but I doubt with the law as it stands the authorities couldn't actually stop them as long as they kept away from airports,RAF bases and the like. Hopefully their lawyers would.
I wonder if the have thought how they would use them to deliver to flats incidentally.
