Every year it's the same pantomime.

On the one hand, it's  a bunch of Red poppy Nazis, firing off stiff letters to Channel Four because John Snow wears a white one, Fatima Manji wears a black one and Matt Frei wears one with a fairy light on.

On the other you have a bunch of Social Justice Warriors, keen to tell us all - loudly and great length (do they have any other default settings?) - what poppies and those who wear them think and glorify in. As per usual with these soppy so-and-so's, the drop off from wearing a poppy to being a blood-crazed Spartan ready to rape in the name of your country, is but a short step.

Thank God there's a largely silent majority who remember folks who put duty and quiet determination before ambition and gross emotional lability, wear their poppy, quietly reflect perhaps on people they knew who made the ultimate sacrifice - and then get on with their lives.

I see some snowflake piece of **** at Southampton Uni, the "president" no less, has taken offence at a 100 year old mural to commemorate people from uni who went off to ww2, and vowed to paint over it as it only contains "white men". I quote: "Mark my words - we're taking down the mural of white men... even if I have to paint it over myself." .. "As white people, we are so so ignorant and closed minded without even realising it. Listen to your black friends/colleagues/students and ask how you can be the ally they want!"

Can we not get some authentic lee enfields from the period and put sick offensive SJWs like that up against a wall? Would have a certain form of poetic justice.

correction, "went off to ww1". The painter of the mural was not psychic! WW2 hadn't been invented yet, and WW1 was at that time called "the grate war" - which is a fantastic name for a speed cheese preparation TV show.

The Royal British Legion has no official opinion on the wearing of white poppies, stating that it "is a matter of choice, the Legion doesn't have a problem whether you wear a red one or a white one, both or none at all"

folk will end up not wearing poppies and ruining the brilliant work of royal british legion
if folk try to make them more political.

100 years since end of ww1, not many ww2 vets left, but those of us still here owe a huge debt
to those that went off to fight....not just in thise wars but all others since.

we may not agree with the wars they were fighting but it wasnt the rank and file soldiers that
picked the wars they were sent to fight.

That Southampton mural was a true representation of some of the men who went off to war, there weren't any black people amongst the group painted or they'd have been included.
I suppose this silly girl wants people removed from the mural who actually did fight for their country, to be replaced by fictional characters who didn't?

This is rank BBC style racism, and it's easy to see why the BBC have gone down the racist road they have, if people with this kind of thinking are joining them from uni.

No it doesn't. Sellers of white poppies at a local level decide where the cash goes.

The White Poppy exists only because some people chose to misrepresent the message of the Red poppy and why it was chosen.
Selected because it was the first flower to reappear after the battlefields of Flanders were turned into mud heaps.
It represents those that fought and died.
It was never designed to glorify war.
Wear it or don't wear it but don't try to redefine the message of the Red Poppy.

The great sadness is that we keep going to war, never learning from history.

The red poppy has certainly been politicised. Govts demand our support for 'our boys', 'our heroes' in the waging of political conflicts that have little or nothing to do with defending these islands.

The mandatory wearing of poppies by all and sundry in the media and politics is mere propaganda imo.

I have no feelings either way about a different colour poppy. I just wish our troops would be used to defend us and not to destabilise an already unstable world.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write a now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'. After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance.

During the First World War (1914–1918) much of the fighting took place in Western Europe. Previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud: bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow.

Bright red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) however, were delicate but resilient flowers and grew in their thousands, flourishing even in the middle of chaos and destruction. In early May 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lt Col John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write a now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'.

McCrae’s poem inspired an American academic, Moina Michael, to make and sell red silk poppies which were brought to England by a French woman, Anna Guérin. The (Royal) British Legion, formed in 1921, ordered 9 million of these poppies and sold them on 11 November that year. The poppies sold out almost immediately and that first ever 'Poppy Appeal' raised over £106,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. This was used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing.
Report maleuk01. November 7, 2018 8:53 PM GMT
Thats why poppies should be red, and it does not glorify war, but simply to rember the milions of lives lost through war.
