1. Do you want to compete for a job with lots of extra people, thus encouraging employers to lower the pay grade?
2. Do you want to compete for the buying or renting of a house/flat with lots of extra people thus encouraging estate agents/ landlords to raise the price?

So the answer to both of these is no, but you still want to remain! Crazy

The vast majority of under-25s in Newcastle voted to remain because they had heard that Brexit might lead to problems accessing the Bigg Market.

The problem is that in years gone by, young people when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up would say, e.g. a Doctor, Scientist, Musician, Teacher, Inventor, etc etc.

Ask them now and the answer for the majority will probably be - Famous.

And if you then ask them Famous for what, the reply will in all likelihood be - Don`t know, just Famous.

I agree with lfc and you can blame it on the dreadful, brain destroying, wall to wall Reality TV.

One girl, a nice lass it must be said, is famous for watching the telly ffs.

Why should we take any heed the vast majority can't be bothered to vote?
Report northanlite October 23, 2018 2:20 AM BST
tbh i had forgotten what we were arguing about. the only thing i could be sure of is that you will never answer a direct question and always turn it into
a question that you will then demand an answer to. the question rarely has a definitive answer

mad mad moon has made my point but I'll continue  the theme if I may:

Youngsters say it's their future. So I presume they mean jobs, housing and general quality of life. They support Remain and freedom of movement without limits.

Being in the EU (and thus unlimited migration) creates an oversupply of labour. Thus lower wages and conditions.
It leads to greater demand for housing which leads to higher rents. It increases the burden on school and hospital places. Thus poorer education and health.

To compensate, higher taxation would result, leading to reduced disposable income.

And they want to Remain???

With slightly reduced immigration since the vote, we're seeing vast numbers of job vacancies in the NHS and hotel and catering to name just 2 sectors. That's good news but reported negatively!

Kids have great opportunities now and those opportunities will improve further still when we leave.
Report scandanavian_haven October 23, 2018 9:05 AM BST

Report lfc1971 October 23, 2018 9:27 AM BST
maybe we could hold a referendum on immigration ?
Report Hanx October 23, 2018 9:35 AM BST
All based on the barmy idea that certain generations having fixed ideas, and that you know what future generations will want.

In 1975 the UK voted to stay in the EEC, as it was then, no one with more enthusiasm than young voters. Those young voters are precisely the same old people whose deaths 've kidz of today are counting on to remove Brexit's mandate.

They changed their minds, not to be difficult, but because they had seen how the EU worked, and the direction it is going.

They decided it was not right for them, their children and their grandchildren, indeed for Britain as a whole. They do have a stake in the future, the young people they care about. Just maybe, people who have lived through the whole history of our membership and remember the time before it, are better placed to know what's best than those with almost no experience?

No one is trying to "no platform" the under 25's, but I do sometimes wonder if those young people who delay participating in the political process are not the wise ones, who are waiting till they know a bit more about the world. Their argument is also based on the assumption that today's 8 year olds will agree with them in a decades time. Maybe they might - or nmaybe hey might find an attachment to this institution horribly old fashioned and stuffy, and wonder how we could have been so blind to the opportunities Brexit gives us.

Perhaps, perhaps not, but let's leave that decision for the future.
Report lfc1971 October 23, 2018 9:52 AM BST
good post , and the longer we remain the more difficult it will be for British people to leave as we import more and more remainers to vote against leaving
Report lfc1971 October 23, 2018 9:58 AM BST
And pretty soon it will be they who are making the decisions , not you and not your children
That’s not good
Report jed.davison October 23, 2018 10:09 AM BST
Where does this argument end?

Are we to have a GE every year in case the new batch of 18-year-olds object to the choice made when they were 17? Or shall we do as the DVLA did and make it every six months?

The most important point about the whole Brexit debate is the one made by Hanx above, and by myself on several occasions on these boards. The people who made the original mistake to join the EU were the people whose votes carried the day for Leave 40 years later, when they had had four decades to judge whether staying in the EU was in our best interests.
Report Platini October 23, 2018 12:50 PM BST
Age groups? Thats one way of looking at the vote, but far from the most useful.
