JC is right, you need a license to watch any LIVE TV and even catch up TV on BBC IPlayer.

Tell them you only watch dvds and VHS tapes through your tv, they can`t prove otherwise, unless you are viewing through a smart TV connected to the internet or a Satellite dish. If you watch LIVE TV via the two mentioned methods, get a friend to bake you a cake with a file in it. Crazy

If you only use Amazon, netflix etc, you can own a TV and not pay a license.

But it's not just a TV that counts for watching Live TV, if you watching TV on any device, laptop or phone included, they expect you to pay a license.

Basically, if you phone up and claim you do not watch live TV and only watch say netflix, they will cancel your license, from there on in it's up to simply not get caught Laugh

Try it, they will cancel it if you claim there's no live tv being wathed.

But the thing with the BBC is, if there were stripped of forcing people to pay for a TV license, you'd still be paying one to the governemtn, like many other countries do, how much that would be though, I don't know.

Scandi: You could argue that blind people have the benefit of Audio Description.

And anyway, subtitles are not much help when half of BBC4's output seems to be re-runs of Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test. There's only so many times that the sight of Bryan Ferry, Brian bloody Eno and Whispering Bob Harris are entertaining, when they're accompanied by

(INSTRUMENTAL) "What's her name for chin? You're plain" (APPLAUSE) (INAUDIBLE)

And subtitles are literally worse than silence for anything live or recorded within the last couple of days (news, sport, etc.). It's not just that they're indecipherable; they're also several seconds out of synch, making lip-reading impossible.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not arguing that blind people shouldn't have the discount. I'm just saying that if the TV licence is supposed to be a payment for services received, then those of us who aren't receiving the whole service shouldn't have to pay for a whole licence. Otherwise it just confirms that it's not a payment for a service, but rather a feudal tax.
Report scandanavian_haven October 19, 2018 6:18 PM BST
yeah fair enough, should be completely free for deaf or blind anyway imo.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves October 19, 2018 6:42 PM BST
I just think the whole idea of a licence is something from another era. The idea of a country's judiciary having the right to grant or withhold permission to own a television set would never fly now, if you tried to introduce it from scratch, any more than the idea of fining citizens who don't wish to pay for a vast broadcasting network. And David Attenborough really isn't enough to justify it, even if he weren't such a smug, ignorant git.

Report Just Checking October 19, 2018 7:28 PM BST
Council tax only covers a fraction of local government spending, the government then has to give a big chunk of money to make up the difference.

License fee should be optional, i.e. BBC should be subscription based, it's ridiculous that so many pay money to the BBC when so many do not watch it, they know full well it's ridiculous as well, the bigwigs at the top of the chain probably have those types of conversations in the pub after work that go along the lines of "how much longer do you think we can get away with this archaic tax" wouldn't be surprised if they have side wages on when it'll finally be done away with lol.

It's basically another tax on the poor, would be a vote winner if they removed it, though they would have to completely remove it for that to happen rather than have it paid to them.

Btw, who cares what the rest of the world think about the BBC - they don't have to pay the license and can watch iplayer/bbc shows when they like for £0.00.

However “pole tax”? I don’t remember that one. Was it from mediaeval times?

Report Just Checking October 20, 2018 12:39 PM BST
The Pole tax was never implemented, it was a UKIP idea to get eastern europeans to go home Silly.

The problem with the BBC isn't that it's a simple broadcaster, presenting the news or documentaries, it feels clearly (and has pretty much stated this in writing) that it is there to do social engineering, and push society towards what it believes, in it's leftie snowflakey "progressive" way, is correct behaviour.

Maybe they BBC scould start making TVs with a water spritzer that says "bad human" if it detects you watching another channel or surfing a website that has a non PC thought or speech on it?
Report Just Checking October 20, 2018 12:53 PM BST
I'm surprised the interview between emily maitlis (one reason I never watch newsnight now) and the Hungarian minister didn't go more viral, where she is just sickeningly leftie and obviously totally disgusted that they DARE not open their borders to mass immigration from the 3rd world, as she consantly tries to say this makes them far right nazis. The full interview is up but there is a disection of it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zT-P1zQBiWk

I find the way the BBC treats Hungary a brilliant example of their bias. All through the "migrant crisis" the BBC was hugely for "just let them all in and anyone against it supports Hitler". There could be a boat of 10,000 young fit pushy males, all on the make to get a better job in Europe (or worse..), and the BBC would find the 1 snot nosed kid on it and try to pull the heart strings. And we're forced to pay these pr1cks.

Theb there was e.g. that incident where a migrant was being stopped by the police from entering and shouted a load of things and then grabbed his struggling wife and dragged both of them down to the ground as a sort of lie down protest, and the Police stood over them, and the BBC edited the incident to make it look like the Hungarian Police had somehow just brutalised them.  Just one example.
Report RacingCert October 20, 2018 12:55 PM BST
Yes, of course, the bbc is appalling. It’s attempts at social engineering are so lacking in subtlety. The over promotion of minorities is embarrassing ... women in sport in particular.
And yet bbc programs hammer everything in ratings. Soaps excepted I dare say.
I think the chapter extends a few years yet.
For any change we would be relying on MP’s to implement it and I would guess they prefer the devil they know.

I would quite happily watch a plethora of channels.

The BBC might well produce a good service but its arrogant attitude towards its customers in today's world, is just the legacy of a slumbering national relic. The government happily outsources and privatises everything else. Why shouldn't the BBC compete naturally and commercially with its competitors?

TV lends itself to the commercial model. Almost every successful, large scale company within broadcasting in the modern era, has built itself on advertising. Youtube, Google etc.

It's pathetic that they force people to buy a license, in a broadcasting world of ever increasing choice. It's literally just a license to print, which is the standard model when it comes to any consumer interaction with Governmemt bodies that generally rubber stamp what we all need to go about our business, at our cost, for fun.
Report wolf3011 October 23, 2018 9:46 AM BST
I cant believe anyone pays the tv license let alone goes to court to contest it. For one thing, you don't need a license if you have a tv, it could be sitting in the corner of the room as a flower pot for all the court or " investigation officer " knows. You have no legal requirement to tell any tv license goon  details or let them in so how would they prove you were even watching it anyway... of all jobs a tv license officer has to be the saddest job title around. I have a " friend" who hasnt paid a tv license in 20 years - a tv goon comes around, " who are you " I dont have to legally say"- " Do you own a tv" , the reply is none of your business so it's referred back to central offices. The fact the OP has acknowledged the offence by even turning up to court is an admission of guilt essentially in the eyes of the authorities.
