Autumnwatch New England New series.

Every year the leaves of six billion trees across New England turn into a riot of yellows, reds and golds, and Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Gillian Burke have travelled to New Hampshire to beam this phenomenon back to the UK.

They also introduce viewers to wildlife including moose, black bears, bobcats and beavers, as well as the more familiar red foxes, red and grey squirrels and deer. There is also a film of Chris and Michaela joining tourists on a whistle-stop tour of the classic New England sights

why are the trees /leaves so colorful  there ?  ours change for a few days and fall off the trees come the first gust of wind
Report The Leopard October 15, 2018 8:16 PM BST
Must be some places in UK with lots of colourful leaves.

something to do with sugar levels leopard  ...   i've been putting glucose syrup in the feed to see if it helps the tree in the back yard Cool
Report morpteh mackem October 15, 2018 8:43 PM BST
remember they have maples over there that give lovely red colour. we dont have them.
Report Coachbuster October 15, 2018 8:43 PM BST
found the reasons ...

they simply have a lot of red maple trees  ...

the leaves  don't like it here   ...

August weather far toooo cold for their liking  and not enough sunshine , meaning the nights are no where near cold enough in Autumn .

relative of the Acer

Leopard - Sheffield Park, up the road from me in Sussex is one of the very best Autumn colour gardens in the UK. Google it.

Not true to say that Red Maples (Acer Rubrum) do not do well here.  They grow well in the south of England as does the Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum). These two species along with the Tupelo tree (Nyssa Sylvaticum) make up the bulk of the New England autumn colours.  Sheffield Park is known for its Tupelo trees.

Yes, some good pics here :

I think it's more the degree of color that's the issue   ...  the trees themselves will thrive here
Report Coachbuster October 15, 2018 9:28 PM BST
just seen the pictures of Sheffield park and the leaves look quite red   .... must be a certain  strain  that doesn't need much natural light in order to flourish over here  ...a bit like the grapes down there
Report blackbarn October 16, 2018 11:28 AM BST
Coachbuster - the reds you see are predominantly Nyssa's, Acers (maples), Euonymus and Liquidambers. A lot of their Acers are Japanese rather than American varieties, although they do have all the usual New England suspects.

Coach - forgot to mention the wine.  The award winning vineyard next to me only grows Bacchus as a particularly England friendly variety, and they only make still wine from it.  All their other varieties are exactly the same ones as used to make Champagne and other French wines - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris etc

Episode 2

Sunny !
Report Coachbuster October 16, 2018 8:29 PM BST
Blackbarn ...i just assumed they were special strains of cool climate grapes  .... astounded there is enough warm sun for long enough to ripen them .

Those red maples are special though ...  really thought only Canada/NE USA had leaves that color
Report blackbarn October 16, 2018 8:54 PM BST
Coach - back to nicer subjectsWink - Apart from the varieties Bacchus and Ortega (Cool!) you are correct in that although the grape varieties are exactly the same, the grafted material for the vines is carefully chosen to make the best of what is, even in Sussex, right on the European edge of where decent wine can be made. Do not though underestimate the quality of English wine, particularly Sparkling - loads of Vineyards round us regularly pi77 all over French Champagne in blind tastings, even on their turf - Ridgeview, Wiston, Albourne etc etc.

Here is a link to next door - https://www.albourneestate.co.uk/
If you are ever down this way in 2019, book a tour. The site and vineyard are idyllic.
Report Coachbuster October 16, 2018 9:15 PM BST
I have heard good things about English wine generally  ... the chalk down there probably helps too ...   it's all clay/sandy soils up this way (East Anglia) and yet there are successful vineyards  in the area .
Not sure if Belgium or Netherlands produces wine either ...never hear about it .  It's weird what grows where .  Once again  ,it's all to do with sugars and light angles,late/early frosts etc ...some maniac  has started viticulture in Scotland .

If only Kirsty Maccoll was still alive, she'd be able to see what she wasn't looking for! Wink

There is an family guy episode devoted to New Yorker "leafers" going to New England to see those leaves turn colour.

If people here had been using their time contructively watching that fine educational program, they'd have already known about this phenomenon!

Given that talking about hitler is once again the order of the day on chit chat (for some reason), I take it you all remember the one about the forest in East Germany that had been planted out back in the day so that some trees turned colour this time of year in a pattern ... to form a swastika when viewed from above Laugh

They cut down a lot of them to remove the pattern, seems a bit harsh on the trees. Could they not have just sprayed a little Agent Orange every september?

I was wondering if this is shown in the US as there would obviously be a market for it, it's a coproduction with PBS and so will be shown there.

Come in Packham give them one of your infamous double entendres! LaughLaughLaughLaughDevil
