It's been on the cards for a while.  I don't think they can blame their problems entirely on the general high street malaise.

The displays are often akin to a jumble sale, the products are overpriced and the flooring in my local store needs to be renewed.

I recall going into the branch in Ealing about three years ago. A busy high street at around 1pm on a weekday. More staff than customers and half the lights not working.

How W H Smith have managed to stay in business never fails to surprise me.

Me too alun!

As has already been said, on most occasions there are more staff than customers, and most purchases must be less than a fiver!

The only time people queue to pay, is on the build up to Christmas, and how the hell they can support a two storey mega store, in a shopping centre,
is more than difficult to understand!

Will be a great shame if they did go under but, in the meantime, we will lose another amenity on the high street!

Good.
Profiteers that squeezed themselves into hospitals and airports, they've been ripping people off for years.
One of the worst shops on the high street.

Isn't every business on the high street a profiteer?

A store offers stuff for sale, and people have the choice to buy or shop some place else.
How is that ripping people off?

I agree with you Alun on that, I cannot remember the last time I have been in one of their outlets. As sad as it may seem, their demise will be no great loss to the High Street.

No Crippen, it isn't.
But don't let that stop you posting erroneous crap.

W H Smith seem to have been handling its downturn quite well.

Apparently their profits have only slumped 3% and that's after a difficult year.
It looks like they're weathering the storm.

Women's fashion retailer Coast has gone into administration, putting 300 jobs at risk, in a sign of continuing pain on the High Street.

The collapse means the immediate closure of its 18 UK outlets, at locations including Oxford Street and Westfield in London.

Coast also has five stores in Ireland, two in Dubai and two in Kuwait.

It has numerous concessions in department stores, including House of Fraser, Debenhams and John Lewis.

Coast is owned by Aurora Fashions, which also owns retailers Oasis and Warehouse

@WHS_Carpet followed for a few years on twitter

A depressing tale of photos of WHSmiths from around the UK

Shoddy shelving, stained cheap carpeting, 2013 Annuals in the clearance section, snorkelling kits in Midlands motorway service stations, etc. etc.

Check it out for a smile with a heavy heart. So much rings true.
