my 2 favourite comedies ever.first pictures i ever went to was steptoe and son ride again in 1973 hilarious.when you think that most of the steptoe episodes there was just the 2 of them in it just shades it for me.

Both were brilliantly wrote, but S & S for I. Personally, I thought the old Black & White episodes were the best, but The Seven Steptorai was my all time favourite episode, which was shown at the height of the Bruce Lee phenomenon

..... they went too far with Only Fools & Horses, the later ones were poor.
By:
Nothing beats that second series of only fools
Yellow pearl is my most favourite episode |
By:
I remember the home getting split in to 2.
S&S was brilliantly scripted and acted as was OFAH but as Mac said OFAH ran out of steam way before the end. |
By:
Steptoe was great too
By:
A bit off the subject, but I was watching The Two Ronnies on Yesterday just now and I must say that it hasn`t aged well. Thought it was very good when first shown but definitely not now, imo, whereas Steptoe and OFAH are just as funny now as when first shown.

I've never seen steptoe, but often heard it referenced, like most sitcoms, they tend to go on too long, Friends went on way too long, I think 5 years should be the max. Whereas Fawlty Towers was the opposite, was too short. Was never a fan of fraiser or Sinfield, thought the latter in particular was overrated and poor. Seen most of the repeats of Cheers which is the best of the American sitcoms for me. Ms Brown boys is a great example of modern rubbish.
Father Ted was simple but brilliant imo. Never a fan of the Office, just thought it was absolute shyte, excuse my French. Black Adder, middle class pap. |

I liked the ending to the steptoe and son series
Harold finally getting one over his dad, but his dad being none the wiser ![]() It sort of gave it a good closure Ofah is good but it became way to soapy for my liking, and it should have never finished on them becoming millionaires, it wasnt what they were tbh. |
By:
Most deffo Steptoe & Son with a hint of On The Buses
Who can forget Coffin episode or when bought that Greyhound ( Hercules) Programs we'll never ever see likes of again |
By:
Steptoe and son hands down , you can see most shows free on YouTube, I’ve had the theme tune as my ring tone for many years ,the amount of people who laugh or comment when it rings in public is unreal

All put in the shade by Gimme Gimme Gimme.

Steptoe by a distance. We all remember certain OFAH episodes but they were all from the first few years after that it was all pretty poor. 'Damian', Going off to Amsterdam for drugs, trouble with the mafia in the USA, becoming millionaire's ............ all rubbish.
So may great Steptoe's and some been mentioned below but another was when he the old man taught the son to dance to impress a girl at the local dance ball. He gradually showed him the steps in the front room and Harold became pretty good. Problem was he taught him all of the ladies steps as he was 'leading'. Cue catastrophe when he goes off to dance with his girl. |

OFAH did go on too long, but there were many funny episodes. Whereas S+S was funny sporadically.
The Daddy of them all was Norman Stanley Fletcher. ![]() |

Yeah that was funny, but tbf to his dad he was generally trying to help him , just a bit thick weren't they ![]() Another good episode is when his dad pretends to have a bad back, nicks all the pink liqueur all sorts ![]() |

Only Fools And Horses but only just.
By:
I'd pick Only Fools And Horses out of the two, I'd still watch an episode of OFAH but I wouldn't be too bothered about Steptoe and Son.
As Blackrock said earlier, neither of those series could hold a candle to Porridge which is timeless comedy. I used to really like Rising Damp and The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin back in the day as well. |
By:
contrast this with dads army, old men bumbling about saying nothing, doing nothing, bit of a class thing in there between mainwaring and wilson, one fckn half joke in the whole shebang, shoitttttte
By:
out of the two i would just give it to OFAH up to the jolly boys outing, but my fav will always be whatever happened to the likely lads.
By:
Porridge was good "there's a thief amongst us"

Top of the tree for me is Still Game.
Watched more repeats of that than any other comedy. |

The episode with len rossiter in SAS is a classic.
By:
I love OFAH but the more i watch old comedies the more i notice how OFAH have borrowed scenes/lines/situations ..and in truth i haven't even seen that many ...but it's evident .
OFAH for me ...Steptoe was OK though ,i love the funeral film ...brilliant comedy with Bill Maynard |
By:
Leonard Rossiter was a genius portmanpark
By:
Best bit from that episode portmanpark.
Where the old lag asked Steptoe senior if he'd got anything to eat. I've got some porridge. That'll do. It's a bit lumpy Oh I like the lumps Looks of disgust all around. |
By:
^ In that episode when Leonard Rossiter asks if the skeleton is the lodger, superb. Fools def went on too long but still great to watch, along with Porridge and Bilko
By:
Tastes in humour change over the years and like most things they
are of their time so comparisons are not easy. I've always liked Steptoe I remember it was also on the radio. Not a fan of OFAH, seemed very basic meat and potatoes comedy. |
By:
S&S Best ever was The escaped prisoner Leonard Rossiter
OFAH beat ever was To Hull and Back and Jolly Boys Outing OFAH just shades it for me. i ALSO Loved Rising Damp. |
