Never heard of a road crash with that many people killed without a single survivor in the vehicle. All 18 dead, what you'd expect from a plane crash.
Report Ramruma October 8, 2018 4:36 AM BST
Carbon monoxide leaking into the vehicle?

Saw an accident once where the driver fainted and then crashed into a tree. Her mother, rear seat passenger died Sad

Maybe the driver lost consciousness and his/her foot got put on the accelerator?

Can't imagine many had seat belts on.

Probably OK on american roads but some of these limos are monsters and very unmanoeverable, with wheels metres apart.  They just can't
turn corners.

This limo was a 2001 Ford super duty probably an F-350 (carries 9)  ,kerb weight 5000 pounds before it’s been stretched and filled with 18 people .Reckon laden it weighed 8000lb min .Suspect it could have suffered from a mechanical problem engine problems maybe ,and cut out coming down what looks like a hill to a T junction ,with no servo or power steering a hard to stop difficult to steer vehicle becomes impossible to steer or stop .A few news sites saying it ploughed through a crowd but that looks incorrect and the two pedestrians were hit by the suv that was struck by the f-350 stretch .Brake failure or power steering failure could also be possible although seen a report that the trip was a tour of wineries ,had the trip already been to a brewery ? Even if the driver was sober a noisey party in the back could be distracting ,surprised as any that only one pass was taken to hospital but died shortly thereafter or was DOA ,maybe the collision with the suv was the cause of so many deaths here .Sad stuff and can’t say I am a fan of stretch limos ,have driven one and to. say I was not impressed was a gross understatement .Even Lincoln town cars are bad enough without stretching them ,these trucks stretched are too heavy imo although stretch limo accidents in the USA are rare .

A limousine that crashed and killed 20 people had failed an inspection and should not have been on the road, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says.

Mr Cuomo also told a news conference that the driver did not have the appropriate licence for it.

According to witnesses, the white SUV-style limo failed to halt at a stop sign, and was travelling at around 60mph (95km/h) when it flew through an intersection, hit an empty car outside the Apple Barrel Country Store & Cafe, and then hurtled across a drainage ditch.

All 18 people on board, as well as two pedestrians, were killed outside the restaurant, which is popular among tourists who come to see the trees change colour in the autumn.

Officials have not yet said what caused driver Scott Lisinicchia to lose control, or why the accident was so deadly.

Many have speculated that the limo was modified in way to make it "stretch", which could also have caused it to lose some safety features.

Very sad story, 4 sisters on way to birthday party for one of them all killed, plus their husbands, so parents lose their family, and in turn load of kids are now orphaned.

Pisser off a world sometimes...

The governor said New York would request a cease-and-desist order from the courts to prevent the company, Prestige Limo, from operating until the investigation was completed.

Don't know the law in America but surely someone guilty of manslaughter for allowing the vehicle to be used after failing a test.
Read the full report, heart breaking stuff.

Can't imagine 18 people in a stretch limo...

I would have thought a dozen would have been stretching it!

This car was ancient and, unless it had the brakes upgraded, it would have struggled to stop, if on a long incline!
Report Just Checking October 9, 2018 10:28 AM BST
Interesting thought actually. If your brakes fail you can attempt to use the gears to slow the car down, which people here should know how to do.

The US love their automatic cars, can you even attempt that properly in an automatic? From my limited understanding as to how these things work, not so much?
Report Lady Faye Verrit October 9, 2018 10:39 AM BST
Can't do that with an auto box...

The operator of a limousine company involved in a deadly crash in upstate New York on Saturday has been arrested on a charge of negligent homicide.

They say the driver did not have a proper licence and the vehicle should not have not been on the road.

Nauman Hussain, operator of Prestige Limousine, denies the charges.
