"Between 10 and 15 stores are planned for new locations, next to existing Tesco stores, and a small number of converted Tesco stores".

This could be a new sport, watching the poor people heading into Jacks lustily casting an eye on Tesco where they can't afford anything.

Aldi and Lidl have shown us how to do things regarding value for money, now we must try and send them packing.

I must be honest and say I've never heard of this new supermarket chain until I read this. I'm not particular sure I want one in my manor Sad
Report SontaranStratagem September 22, 2018 1:54 PM BST
Aldi is perfectly fine but lidl can take a hike imo

But if you want budget then Home Bargains or B & M are the best anyway

And 4 cans for 45p? have you tasted fair value cola? its probably on a par with that for beer drinkers, don't waste your bloody time Plain

Someone ought to open a store next door and call it Jock's. Could sell things like watered down Buckie or underweight tins of shortbread.
Report lfc1971 September 22, 2018 2:52 PM BST
: ) there we go , everyone can be found at these stores , but why don’t Tesco just reduce their prices ?
I don’t know

the opening of the jack shop coinciding with a massive advertising push this week in the papers for their essentials in their Tesco shops, only opening 10 jacks apparently ween people in to the Tesco brand, then phase the jacks shops out,is the strategy I suppose
Report Just Checking September 22, 2018 7:52 PM BST
I used to like LIDL but it seems to be going downhill, things I used to buy they don't now sell and not been replaced.

One example: Why have piles of cheese that are very similar (loads of varietes of full fat cheddar that are all basically the same) and stop selling all the decent low fat cheeses they used to sell? So I'll just go to another shop nearby that sells low fat cheese and they lose my entire basket as I won't go to two shops. It's just clueless management.
Report Just Checking September 22, 2018 7:56 PM BST
And the LIDL automatic tills are in my experience the worst for having a confusing interface and needing to get the guy over. Tesco are a dream in comparison. Asda's also pretty good. Sainsburies are a bit crap (useless with coupons) but not as bad as LIDL.
Report Coachbuster September 22, 2018 7:58 PM BST
you won't get everything you need in ALDI or LIDL , so you end up going to one of the other big stores to finish the shop .  What i do get in ALDI is generally pretty good quality esp in the specially select range  ....just can't see Jacks hitting that value for money
Report Just Checking September 22, 2018 8:10 PM BST
But coachbuster I used to get much more. That's the thing, there seems to be less every time.
They USED to get one good one of each product type and sell it cheaply.
Filling the shelves with what are variations of the same product and removing a product type (e.g. low fat cheese) is just stupid.

I stood there wondering what they were thinking, "who would think anyone is sufficiently picky to care about all these varations of cheddar"?

Do you really care about the difference between the various strengths of cheddar by different brands and different shades of orange or red???

Who does?! But the difference between wanting a low fat or full fat cheese IS significant, if like me you watch your fat intake to leave space for important food intake, like alcohol calories LaughLaughLaughWinkDevilDevil
Report Coachbuster September 22, 2018 8:16 PM BST
i take your point on that ,does seem odd as low fat cheddar would be a good seller ...  i don't know about the cheese as i always get full fat which i must say is exceptional ...i have found  the range baffling at times though ...overall if there's something i can't get i replace it with similar   ...  i tend to get the offers in Sainsburys these days and other bits and pieces like branded goods   ... you won't find many brand names in aldi
Report Coachbuster September 22, 2018 8:17 PM BST
don't forget to watch your carbs JC !!!  they can put on more weight than the fat youre avoiding

I've already eaten too much today. Must be the first signs of winter coming and my "fatten up for hibernation" bear instinct kicking in.

i have that same bear instinct  JC... always eat more in winter when i don't need really need to   ...  then it's hard work getting rid of any added weight in spring .

Report Alices September 25, 2018 1:23 PM BST
Went to jacks the day it opened last Thursday, had a hospital appt at Papworth and called in on the way back, not too much of a detour, pace was full of screaming kids as it was about 3.15. A lot of te products were good value and if I lived nearer would go again, good fresh Bakery dept although no deli, thy did have some Brand names, but the Veg section was very good and fresh, if one opens near you it's worth a look.
Report Coachbuster September 25, 2018 6:48 PM BST
is the produce not simply the stuff they sell in tesco but a lesser range  (plus fewer staff) ?

ALDIs trick is all about efficiency ...only stock what sells at a fast rate and make sure every staff member is not sitting about ...if there is a queue staff a till ,if no queue,  close the check out ...simples
