In all seriousness the best Investment I ever made was buying the book, The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life First by Alice Schroeder. Cost about £4 from a charity shop and takes ages to read but steers you in the right direction. Rich Dad/Poor Dad is a decent start and I reckon brassneck will recommend some good un's.

Like the hosses, you're pretty reliant on other people's homework unless you put the hours in. I got involved this year after a long sabbatical. I ended up looking at the New Year press tips- I assume they save a good un for Christmas- seeing which had gone down after a couple of months and studied 6 of those.

I bought my copy of "The Snowball" for just £1 from a library book sale, so if you listen to Crispy before me you're £2 behind already.

That's tight alun2005. He rummaged around the floor for winners. His early investing strategy was based on people who pick up disposed of cigarettes to get a drag out of them.

Crispy, talking about one of my best investments, a month or so ago I picked up a copy of this for just over £1 via a 'secondhand' sale. It arrived still in the shrink-wrapping in immaculate condition, and no sticky patches much to my surprise.
I had to wait a long time to get it at the sort of price I like, but I was finally rewarded for my patience. Many thanks for introducing me to this, HER and THEM. . https://www.amazon.co.uk/Camomile-Lawn-DVD-Felicity-Kendal/dp/B00158FK24/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1537379562&sr=1-1&keywords=camomile+lawn |

Back to the gambling (aka share tips):
To prove my credentials: FCCN - French Connection. Tomorrow morning they are expected to report. I expect the shares will go up tomorrow. Currently 50p. Why will they go up? Firstly, they are low because retail is bombed out at the minute. But FCCN are getting out of retail and focusing on the really lucrative licensing of their brand. The market will catch on, and tomorrow might just be the time they do. A good medium term bet. The real biggie: HUR - Hurricane Energy. Firstly, let me start by saying that these are EXTREMELY HIGH RISK shares. Oil exploration companies, particularly small ones, are the quick way to the poor house. Believe me - I've got the t-shirt. But Hurricane is different....... They have found a huge amount of oil West of Shetland and are currently putting in place an Early Production System (I won't bore you with the details - use Google if you are interested). At the minute they are not producing any oil, but when the oil starts coming (expected early next year) then the price just has to be higher than it is now. There is very little that could go wrong (cough!!) because they are just engineering, and putting the bits together in the West of Shetland waters. Currently 53p. At First Oil (within 6 months) I hope they will be around 80p. This is the point to get out if you value your money. If you like a gamble, staying in while the EPS proves that the oil can be extracted could lead to the share price getting very, very niiiiiice. It could also all go horribly wrong and you could lose the lot. Secondly, next year they start a new drilling programme which should prove that there is a load more black stuff gown there. Good luck if you get involved, but remember, no advice from me is intended, and any decisions made are your own. |

As an added bonus, I give you:
IQE. They make parts that go into electronics (they are very technical). This company will make shareholders very rich or very poor. I think the former, but many disagree. If you want to know in detail what they do, read the ADVFN boards, particularly posts by Sweenoid. These will start to come good towards the end of next year, I reckon. Currently 90p. Could be 500p in a few years. Could just as easily be 0p. |

There is a thread on the Tradefair & Financials forum called “Testing the theory that broker forecasts are useless”. It was started by Bongo who tracked the strongest consensus sells from the HL website for 6 months at a time.
The three times he did it the brokers recommended sells outperformed the FTSE by: +2.07% +16.9% +5.33% After a break of a few months, I took over and the following two periods again outperformed the FTSE by: +4.98% +10.15% I have just started tracking the next period. Not a bad system so far! Although you would think there must be a negative period soon (probably when there is a strong downturn in the markets). |

Why will they go up? Firstly, they are low because retail is bombed out at the minute. But FCCN are getting out of retail and focusing on the really lucrative licensing of their brand. The market will catch on, and tomorrow might just be the time they do. A good medium term bet. I have actually noticed a small error in my piece, it should say "focusing on the really lucrative wholesale market and licensing of their brand" Welcome to higher risk stock market investing! Results out this morning are kind of what was expected, although the retail figures are quite dire - but we knew that, right? The market has focused on the falling retail figures, when the real story is that the wholesale figures are doing really quite well. Also, they have closed 2 shops and are closing 8 more when the leases expire soon. The part of the business that is performing badly is getting binned, and will leave the profit making wholesale and licensing business. Currently valued at cash and stock, so the actual business is in for almost free. Currently 44p, which I think is a bargain. Forget the fluctuations - look at the price in 6 months time. |

I collect half pennies, pennies and two penny pieces.
The 'collectors' coins sold by the companies with Mint in their names in particular should be avoided like the plague. Loads of coin dealers online which will give you some idea of what your coins are worth. |
|
By:
research the prices, you can see what the recent sells for your item go for.
I pop them in at a fixed price higher than its true value but allow the buyer to make an offer. |

yes the mint coins are a joke mark up but people go nuts for them.

there is a coin price guide compiled by tony clayton..link below
its taken from coin world and auction prices, and seems pretty decent as rule of thumb guide, some rarer coins may be under quoted, imo expect to pay 15% or so plus vat if you sell at auction coin dealers will probs offer about 50-60 % of the value quoted on run of the mill coins but near to 80% on rarer types you can punt em on ebay and might do well but its pot luck grading can be difficult, and important, so have a good look at what a dealer is grading the coins he is selling in his shop or website, before agreeing. not all of them are generous http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/ royal mint had auction of rare coins today, including a gold kew garden 50p coin prices dont seem to rise much ...lots of coin collectors no longer with us and not so many new collectors amongst the young |

coins that have a high value due to metal content, gold silver platinum etc
weigh em and work out scrap value find best local quote....probs about 95% scrap value, posting em is expensive if heavy ! |
