Some childhood memories are sacred , innocent recollections of ones infant years . Crackerjack Pencils , John Noakes being dragged around the Blue Peter studio by a defacating Elephant or being told it was 'time for bed' by a moustached spring by the name of Zebedee . Add into the mix an american children's programme which provided entertaining viewing with an educational slant (If you ignore their insistance on calling the 26th letter of the alphabet 'Zeee') . The programme featured presenters and guests of different ethnicities , a social enlightenment to many youngsters on this side of the Pond , and many costumed amimal characters such as Big Bird and Kermit The Frog . Add to the mix 2 puppets characterising a couple of guys , one older and wiser than the other , who went by the names of Bert and Ernie . Fond memories indeed of a long distant televisual feast that I , and many others , have carried in our hearts for 40 years or more .
Innocent creations that clearly had no deviant undertones , until now . Because this morning I hear that the producers of Sesame Street have been forced to come out and publicly state that the aforementioned Bert and Ernie were NOT a gay couple ! WTF ! Did I hear that correctly . Yep , 100% ! The producer of Sesame Street has made a statement to the effect that "Bert and Ernie were 'best friends' and have no sexual orientation" . Now , bearing in mind that this was a TV show viewed by pre-teens , sexual orientation shouldn't even enter the equation but hey-ho , gender-awareness has reared its ugly head and penetrated a subject that should have been well off the radar . Now , correct me if I'm wrong (I often am) but we are talking about puppets , animated characters thrown together using a few scraps of cloth and a couple of wigs and although I can't recall ever observing them below the waist I'm 99% certain that the creators of these figures didn't use any of the materials at hand to fashion replica genitalia , thus rendering their possible sexual orientation / activity totally irrelevant .
So that begs the question : Why do these freaks have to 'gender-assess' everything that moves ? Why can't they leave children to be children and puppets to be puppets ? This craziness has got so out of control I cannot see it being reversed especially when media outlets cover the story with an air of seriousness almost suggesting that this is a subject that needs to be discussed by psychologists and academics .
I dread to think what they're gonna make of the Teletubbies in years to come .....

I totally oppose your view reyn - it is correct that gendaar assessment and re-assessment be maintained. It should be vigorously checked/examined hour by hour to monitor change. This should be crucial should some won suddenly alter gender. Remember all the self declarers. Think of the damage that could be caused if you make an error. Assessment should be accurate and swift. In fact I am proposing we should have gender assessment officers patrolling the streets to maintain scrutiny of gender behaviour. Dinosaurs like you need to be put in you're plaice. The new world beckons - open your arms(?) and embrace. Drink your Victory gin, and relax (everybody's doing it. Just do it - as the song goes)

I still recall Morcambe & Wise sketches / bedroom scenes with amusement rather than disgust .
