Those online sites seem a rip-off to me, prices way above current scrap value.

Where can you buy the cheapest gold sovereigns?

Nobody is going to sell a Gold sovereign for less than the scrap price of gold.

auctions are likely to be decent spots to buy coins.

you can often get other gold coins at cheaper rates than sovreigns, but you may not
find it as easy to sell them.

and obviously you need to know gold content, and weight

Scrap value?  Did you mean spot price?

Scrap is what the buyer offers you and is massively below spot.

Spot is the current market price and the seller always adds a few £££ on (or takes a few off when buying back).

Bairds of London are top of the pops, imo.  Been using them for years.

Might not be a bad time to be buying gold!

Royal Mint or there is a shop in London that only sells Gold coins, but think you might be paying whatever the price of Gold is that day.

Sold a couple of half-sovereigns on eBay.  Whether I would BUY any is another matter.

At least you can check 'sold' prices.

got mine off of bullion by post but wanted specific year which they had!!

I buy scrap gold and silver and make my own bars out of them.

not melted any for a while so have a big stash to melt.

never enough time in the summer to do it.
