Upwards of 170 deaths in 1971 in Northern Ireland ,picking out a handful and expecting them to be treated differently from all the others is wrong ,the way some use the term innocent civilians at the same time call all British Army deaths as legitimate targets and  fail to accept the murder of innocent Protestants as secterian is wrong and won’t help. The way the emphasis is placed on deaths by the British Army and the way the OP has taken one set of events only distorts the picture and prevents a balenced narrative ever being projected ,things were bad in 71 and this was not a beginning ,kids were being killed in firebombed shops ,off duty soldiers out drinking were lured to a  country  location and executed ,the ira were murdering anyone they wanted to ,the civil rights movement was hijacked and truth was a big casualty ,propaganda was used by all and the big picture was distorted .

And over a period of 3 days
Now what possible reason would there be for doing that
No they went there to arrest members of the IRA , who with the help of the civilians were intent on murdering members of the army
As they had already done before and would do again

lfc1971, your naivety/stupidity never ceases to amaze me. It appears that once more you are the self appointed oracle on a subject that you know absolutely feck all about. Whats more; you are so close minded that your ignorance would shame a 6 year old. Did your mum never tell you two ears and one mouth........?

I did a history and politics degree and one of the subjects which I studied in great length was the politics of Northern Ireland. It was vastly more complicated than your crayon sketch of 'those bad men in the IRA/the people were lucky to be given every opportunity that being part of the British empire bestowed upon them......'

Have you given any thought as to why the IRA progressed from a peaceful organisation campaigning for equality and opportunity (which Catholics clearly didn't have)? Of course, that is not to excuse their later atrocities. However, you must understand that they were a frustrated and poverty stricken community who struggled to find gainful employment, and, were very much 2nd class citizens downtrodden by a police force and politicians who hated and viewed them as antagonists as much as the protestant community itself did!

The horrors at Ballymurphy and Derry were almost carbon copies of one another. Yet you don't think the slaying of innocent women and a priest at a time that the Paras were supposedly 'engaged in a (non existent) gun battle' is evidence of British command wrong doings?

The parallels are eerily similar to the Hillsborough tragedy;a as we now know, was when football fans were viewed with suspicion, treated like animals and then at the hands of the authorities a huge cover up ensued after they themselves caused it! No doubt you said there was nothing to see there either and it was all the fans fault (in line with the police and governments official bullsh1t at the time).

There have been numerous examples of wrong doings instigated from the very top and then covered up. I am glad that an ostrich like yourself can testify to what happened when his head is buried under the ground (or up his own ar$e if you would prefer).

Poverty in the estate? It was no different to many estates right throughout the country then and now it has nothing to do with discrimination or pretendy civil rights

As someone who did two tours of NI in 74 and 75 I'm hardly impartial.

The paras are one of Britain's elite troops as witnessed by their history. They quite rightly have a fearful reputation. I'm not sure (on Bloody Sunday) whether they showed ill-discipline or great discipline; ill-discipline by firing indiscriminately or great discipline by obeying orders. My guess and it is a guess is that they obeyed orders - whatever those orders were we will probably never know. Orders would have been given at several levels of command.

I do think they (not necessarily the squaddies) were wrong but can understand why it happened.

The IRA, or at least the violent contingent, were always wrong in their tactics/strategy.

Wiki: More than 3,500 people were killed in the conflict, of whom 52% were civilians, 32% were members of the British security forces, and 16% were members of paramilitary groups

Yes yes , the British army went there to arrest members of the IRA
And instead over 3 days decided to shoot innocent people
That I am sorry makes no sense whatsoever , of course mistakes were made but they were going a deadly and job
Now as I say , they have no grounds to expect British soldiers in the dock when they
on that estate were members of the IRA , helpers of the IRA , and ultimately were responsible for those terrible events
And then of course these same people would vote into parliament those responsible for the terror and bombing and the innocent lives lost as their repesentatives in government
Well I’m sorry , they will have to be quiet and look at their conscience before anything else

Interestingly to add to the general confusion of what might have happened over those 3 days the loyalist UVF have admitted to being responsible for some of the shootings using a rifle modified to fire the same type of bullets as the British army
The UVF claimed the weapon was purchased from a Belfast gunsmith and recovered by police a decade later

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

LFC, you are beyond rational thought. You just trot out any spurious rhetoric and show yourself to be a complete ignoaramus time after time. The IRA aren't going to use a sniper to down the community priest, an unarmed woman and a man helping to deliver bread and milk to the families of hungry children. So for one second who do you think did this.........answers on a postcard please.

Simply repeating the same nonsense over and over again doesn't make you right because you speak the loudest. I am not going to bother discussing this any further after this post because absolutely nothing ever steers you away (or even consider) anything which isn't inline with your personal agenda and narrow minded views.

I will end by saying once more you probably know more about splitting an atom than you do the Northern Irish conflict. Whether you believe it or not; innocent people were killed by the Paras using strong arm tactics under orders from a commander and government determined to show the catholic community 'who was boss.' There were subsequent cover ups which is why the powers that be are absolutely squirming now the truth is starting to come out. Corruption and bullying tactics were absolutely rife in the 70's & 80's and horrendous acts and decisions were made by our very government down.

And stop talking rubbish about the IRA and who they would or wouldn’t kill , the murders women and children and shot s catholic mother of 6 children because she went to help a wounded British soldier lying on the streets of one of these estates

Apart from the army there were shots fired by both republican and loyalist terrorist groups.
I think it's best to let the inquiry do its job and keep the condemnation til we know all the facts although this might be difficult given the time lapse.

You are a caring man casemoney

The paras had a difficult job, they are faced by an very large angry mob, pretty night out of control
They have to break up this mob..in attempting this they come under fire...

It needs an inquiry, aggression can get out of hand....

I will await the result

'You are a caring man casemoney

The paras had a difficult job', I will await the result, are you for f$£"&g real?.

Here's an idea!, we have sent troops to NI to 'protect the Catholics, (who welcomed the British troops) why don't we send a Scottish Protestant Para regiment to oversee this.

The result of a perfectly 'predictable Bloody Day' saw the rise of the IRA, (According to a senior IRA leader, the IRA saw ranks swell from just over 118 to over 1100 in just one week and growing week on week, we all know about the wasted lives since.

For those ignorant on this subject, the Catholics were peacefully marching in 1972 in one of the most supposedly democratic country's in the world, for one man one vote, where as for example a Protestant factory owner had 30+ votes ensuring that even in the wards were they were outnumbered, they kept control, some democracy!!.

A word of advice for some of the eejicts on here, get a brain, get an education, then come back and comment on this subject

For the fecking eejits on here Google the 27 miles of 'peace walls' (Think Berlin wall) slicing' through communities to stop themselves harming or killing each. welcome to the not publicised democratic Great Britain.

Didn't we invade some Arab countries recently on the basis that they had nasty weapons and needed our brand of democracy, how did that work out.

boxingthefox in n Ireland company owners has one extra vote , this applied equally for Catholics and Protestants and indeed was the case in the rest of the U.K. until the 1950s , and  continued for a time after that in parts of London

In 1969 n Ireland’s voting system was brought into line with the U.K. and this extra vote if you were a business owner was dropped so has no relevance to whatever happened in ballymurphy

In 1973  the first ever referendum in any part of the U.K. was held on whether to remain part of the UK or form a United ireland

600,000 voted to remain as part of the U.K.
6,000 voted for a united Ireland

voter turnout 58.7 % many nationalists boycotted the democratic vote , the vote they claimed they didn’t have , more lies , they refused to respect the democratic result and instead set on a path of murder and bombing and terror

Remember that when you look at ballymurphy , they had the vote and didn’t use it and didn’t respect it

My main interest here is How and Why it was seen fit to shoot a Mother of 8 ,or infact any woman 14 times It has been suggested there were were Various Factions involved , So they were all taking pot shots at this Woman ??

The Paras were an out of Control gang of Thugs Hiding behind  British Army Uniforms, A disgrace to Our nation at the Time,

I consider myself English and a Supporter of our Armed forces , I do not Support the

Slaughter of innocent People .. As already stated we await the outcome of the Inquiry ...

"I am never going to believe a british soldier would shoot a mother",

You won't believe they shot dead a priest who was administering the last rites on a fatally injured man,
You won't believe they allegedly staged a mock execution causing death through heart attack.

Despite the concentrated efforts of covering up for nearly 50 years(til even today),it is time for accountability for the poor families.

The reason British troops were out in N.Ireland was because of the appalling bombing campaign by the IRA.

There were car bombs going off all the time.

The Ballymurphy is a staunch Roman Catholic area of Belfast. All the British troops encountered was hate, rocks and petrol bombs.

Marches were not peaceful, not in the 1970's.

The British troops were trying to maintain order, the Paras were given the toughest jobs because they are our elite troops.

There were always IRA snipers to look out for, they targeted British troops

The cause of the problem was discrimination against the Catholics by the Protestants in N.Ireland.

This was removed in time.

Peace was eventuaully restored in N.Ireland, it was a job well done.

A lot of our troops(including the Paras) were killed or wounded in N.Ireland.

I dont know what happened on this day in Ballymurphy as I was not there. That is why there is an enquiry. I admit some of the things seem disturbing.

You absolute clown, the reason the british troops were there in 1st place was to protect the Catholics from being burnt out of their homes by loyalist terror groups.

FA to do with the IRA at the time.

The troops were brought in to quell rioting in Derry and Belfast after the apprentice boys parade that year nothing to do with the IRA who had little support from the nationalist community at the time anyway, what made the situation worse was the deployment of the B specials to help the ruc, these were nothing but thugs in a uniform.

Well said lfc1971, although there were a great number of tit for tit killings between the Protestants and the Catholics.

Because the IRA were involved and carrying out most of the car bombings, then it was inevitable that the British Army had to
concentrate more on the Catholic community in their search for weapons, bomb making materials and IRA members.
So the Catholics thought they were unfairly targeted and rapidly turned against the British Army.

But the job of the British Army was to maintain peace.

Should the Paras have been sent out, I don't know? Like the Marines these men are our elite troops.

Look what these units did for us in the Falklands.
Report UBLE/REGY November 13, 2018 1:34 PM GMT
The B specials were disbanded the whole of the RUC had to be suspect because of their Protestant bias.

But this has been reformed.

N.Ireland is trapped in history, in my opinion.
One would have thought the Battle of the Boyne took place recently and the apprentice boys defence of Derry.
