My missus and a good friend of mine love them - but I think they lack flavour. My other half raves about the pastry on them. I actually prefer a cold steak & kidney pie straight out of the packet with Colmans mustard smothered on it - especially if I've got a hangover.

(On a side note, the acic test for any can opener is if it can open a Fray Bentos pie - without you having to apply a vice like grip)

I have a minced beef n onion one in the cupboard but am a bit nervous about opening and cooking the thing. The whole idea of a tinned pie seems grim. What's so good about the pastry before I go in??

Created in the latter half of the 19th century, the name is derived from the port of Fray Bentos in Uruguay where the products were originally processed and packaged until the 1960s.

The brand is now owned in the UK by Baxters, which manufactures the product range in Scotland.

Had worse out of a can....

That being said, I don't mind them at all

Morning Aspro, hope you're well. You've got some nerve showing your face after yesterday.......

Umm, don't these Fray Bentos pies have a sell by date somewhere in the region of a decade or so?

All good this end JM, aside from yesterday's result Angry

Good to hear. Very jealous of your CL group although it probably lacks the, ahem, glamour, of our EL one. We were no better yesterday either, can see us ending the season scoring 142 and conceding 150!

I can't see either of us having a great year JM or at best the pair of us with Utd vying for that 4th spot. Liverpool, City and Chelsea look almost certs for the other 3 (sorry Watford)
Report Johnny_Mustang September 3, 2018 9:49 AM BST
Whilst we're at it, and I'm quite distressed openly admitting this, I like those tins of Stagg Chili on a baked potato.

Only if we're fresh out of foie gras of course.
Report Johnny_Mustang September 3, 2018 9:52 AM BST
You'll do better than us though. Thought you played OK yesterday and didn't give Watford many chances, just one of those games really. We, on the other hand look utter mugs playing out from the back and Cech is an accident waiting to happen. No idea why Leno hasn't started given that we spent millions on him.

Have to admit that I have two in the larder, bought a fair few years ago, when on offer at £1.00 each!

If there is a use by date, and expired, they will probably go the same way as my jar of Vine Leaves, if my daughter sees them!

27% pastry

12% beef

What else is in it ffs, apart from vast quantities of water.

Its most probably artificial c*ap, blackbarn

None of our food from these corporate food chains is organic

Tyson Fury said it best a couple of years ago

"unless you get your own cow and bring it up yourself on just grass, your bound to be eating some form of chemicals and steroids"

He's right, the cows are pumped full of the stuff (chemicals and steroids) and tortured before being killed in the most inhumane way imaginable, we are essentially eating steroided up petrified meat Cry
Report crystalhunt September 3, 2018 10:43 PM BST
My kids used to love them until one of them nearly swallowed something hard. Turned out to be part of a cows tooth. Got in touch with them and they sent an apology and a  box of goodies  ie: some of their other 'meaty' products. The unopened tin which was left in the larder never got opened but was used by the kids for practicing the Discus Laugh

Does that suggest that the small amount of meat is actually from a cow's head?

How many "pies" go uneaten because they can't get the lid off.  If you can it makes a very good throwing weapon with its razor sharp edge.

Lady Faye - Nothing wrong with meat from a cows head - Ox (or beef cheek) is amazing and seriously good value.  Available at nearly all good supermarkets.

Sontaran - thank you for your reply. "the cows are pumped full of the stuff (chemicals and steroids) and tortured before being killed in the most inhumane way imaginable, we are essentially eating steroided up petrified meat"  This is not true if you source your meat from reliable sources, local butcher, local farm shop etc etc.

Nothing wrong with reduced sandwiches, as you could add several days to the date.

I wouldn't pay full price, as prefer to make my own but, as it happens, on Monday I bought a well stuffed prawn sandwich for £1.34,
from Tesco and had it just yesterday.
Report SlippyBlue September 5, 2018 2:00 PM BST
Same here Lady FV, I pop into my local supermarket say about 20.30 ish and get a few sandwiches and wraps for about 40p each, nowt wrong with that at all and they are good for 3 days no problem.
Report Lady Faye Verrit September 5, 2018 3:18 PM BST
As it happens, again, I just popped to the Tesco Express for some vino and other bits, and picked up 3 packs of baked potatoes with cheese,
for 70p each (I certainly wouldn't pay £2.00 for them, but they are also freezable which is great)!

Also an Egg & Cress sandwich for 59p (was £1.10) and a Chicken & Asparagus Risotto for £1.03 (was £2.65)...

Now that's a result, but also, "Hardys Crest" wine....2 for £10.00....

Chuffing rave on, or what!

TVs are better technically speaking, pity it`s all rubbish being shown now, cheap cooking, quiz and reality shows for the plebs.

Same with cars, technically superior but they all look the same and have no character. In 70s for example, I could name every car - there is a Capri, an Anglia, a Zephyr, a Princess, now I wouldn`t know one from another.

Same with snooker players. All clones now with no characters like Big Bill, the Hurricane, Dracula, etc.

It was a treat 40 years ago getting a football match or race meeting on tv, now there is a game or race every five minutes. They are ruining sport with Overkill.

Maybe it`s because I`m getting old, but I wish I could go back in time. Sad

Sea fishing is deffo not as good as it was 40 years ago. Used to love my fishing, now there's nothing to be caught off the beach, not of any size anyway, & by that I mean a pound or more Sad
Report themightymac September 6, 2018 6:54 PM BST
Food in shops all crap now. People living on frozen microwave meals or meals from fast food outlets so that they can get back on twitter or facebook as quickly as possible. And that`s another thing, much better when if one had to make a phone call, one had to walk up to the town to use one in a big red box. Now they are going about with phones glued to their ears and we, the public who don`t use them, are getting zapped continuously by radiation every time one goes out the door. I fear for the younger generation`s health in later years.

p.s. I never really liked Fray Bentos pies anyway.

TV is way better than it was.

1.  HD and size of screen (and colour FFS)
2.  Variety...loads of choice (I accept that a load of the channels are rubbish)
3.  No white dot at 11.30 or whenever.
4.  Netflix, Amazon etc offers a phenomenal amount of films and programming
5.  Sport - incredible coverage across lots of sports
6.  Sky+ etc.  Record and watch when you want. (I hardly ever have to sit through ads any more)

Sure its not perfect, but defo much better than it ever has ever been.
