All white plumage. Longish, straight legs (about 3"). Body shape and size similar to a small chicken. Head and beak shape similar to a grouse or pheasant.

Had a look on the RSPB website. The closest match seems to be some kind of egret but I'm not at all certain.

does sound like an egret ( snowy ) , whereabouts was it spotted ? got some up northumberland coast ,s considered rare here few years ago as didn't come this far north.

Not a snowy egret. It had a much shorter beak. Body shape was similar but the neck was much thinner.

Spotted Berks/Bucks border on a green space with trees in a built-up, residential area but only a mile from open farmland.

could it be a leucistic ( abnormal plumage , invariably makes them white )  form of a  more common bird ?

Yes, that did occur to me.

My first thought when I saw it was that it was some sort of chicken that had escaped from someone's garden.

Brain size similar to a grouse or pheasant.
Makes a noise similar to strangling a seagull"

It's an Essex bird surely ?

Sounds like an albino hen pheasant to me. You do get leucistic pheasants but they tend to be patchy not all white.

This is not a thread where one should dismiss anothers suggestions, particularly as none of us have seen said bird, BUT

A Ptarmigan in winter plumage in August on the Beds/Bucks border.   I'd take more water with it LeopardLaughLaugh

I'd post the same to you JM, except I know you and know you are on a wind up.   Laugh
