and the travel agent emailed us yesterday to say that the hotel has decided to close early for the summer Cry She flies on the 9th September and they have offerd us an alternative on the opposite sideof the island (majorca)

Absolutley fuming !!!! Cant believe they can just do this 3 weeks before her honey moon. We booked a lovely quiet hotel in Parma and now have been offered a large iberstar hotel on the South east of the island

Any suggesstions ?? surely the hotel can be liable for this unilateral decsion!!!

Call/email ABTA (if your hol is ABTA protected)
https://abta.com/holiday-help-and-complaints/register-a-complaint

Or maybe go into another travel agent and see what they say in terms of where you stand..Good luck.

Also, if the new hotel is cheaper, you are entitled to a refund of the difference which seems obvious I suppose.

If it's any consolation, they Iberostar hotels are usually decent although can't say for this one.
Above average though as a chain

Going bankrupt is one things but closing early (because it suits them??)..the more I think of it Dragon, the more I think this hotel has broken some sort of contract as they took your money. Someone in the business will know for sure. Let us know, I'm intrigued!

What hotel shuts up shop on the first week of September? It just doesn't sound right to me at all T.D. The schools are back, flights comparatively cheaper, it is less scorching hot and early September should be a hotels busiest time. I smell a rat big time mate.

That's where the new hotel is.

"Portopetro is a small fishing village with a population of approximately 500 and consist of a harbour, small marina and a secluded beach which is adjacent to the harbour. There are a number of restaurants and bars distributed along the harbour's edge serving local and Mediterranean cuisine"

Sounds quite quiet and secluded to me.

From 2008

"So not many rights when it comes to flights, but what if your tour operator changes the accommodation and perhaps even the resort that you have booked?

In this instance, Abta (the Association of British Travel Agents) rules say you’re allowed to cancel your holiday and be fully reimbursed. But how many of us would want to do that at the eleventh hour? Alternatively, you should be offered accommodation that’s rated the same as the original or better.

For either of these options, you’re eligible for compensation but not much. The money you receive is calculated on a sliding scale and typically rises to a maximum of around £30 to £40 per person if you cancel because your accommodation is changed within a week of departure.

If you accept the change, on the other hand, or you opt to book another holiday, the compensation may typically range from around 2.5 per cent to 10 per cent of the cost of your holiday depending on how near you are to departure. The exact amount depends on the terms and conditions in the individual tour operator’s brochure.

Personally if the new hotel and location is acceptable I'd ring them up and explain that it is your daughter's honeymoon, not just an ordinary holiday, and say that she was really looking forward to the original hotel and that as a proud dad you are personally disappointed she isn't getting what was expected, and whilst the new hotel seems nice, ask them if there is anything extra they can do to make it extra special.

Worth a try imo
