Vermin (flying rats) or a cute every day bird ?

An associate of mine was sh1t on one whilst walking through town last week. This rather annoyed him. Being the vindictive type,he bought a high powered pellet rifle and calls off at an old railway bridge on his way too and from work to exterminate a few on each occasion.

The total stands at 22.

Not sure where i stand on this one.

Vote in favour here!!   The breasts are absolutely delicious - pan fried really fast.   You needn't even pluck or draw them, just run a sharp knife along the breast bone, peel back the skin, feathers and all, and strip the two breast fillets off and throw the rest away - takes less than two minutes
Report cooperman August 17, 2018 8:42 AM BST
blackbarn correct. Try to find someone who keeps racing pigeons, the birds are always fed the best stuff and exercised but the ones that don't make the grade are the ones for the pot.

Report TELL DEL August 17, 2018 2:19 PM BST
Couple of days ago the cat got a pigeon in the garden, didn't kill it but it was very badly mauled, no question it was a fatal injury, feathers all over the lawn, was bleeding and it couldn't fly it could only flap around. Obviously the kindest thing to do was to put it out of it's misery, but how do you humanely kill a badly injured bird. Never had to do this before, but how exactly do you dispatch the bird instantly and painlessly (?)

I know to dislocate a birds neck is one method - but being very sensitive to animals - my main concern was making a mistake and cause even more suffering. Or a quick blow to the head with a spade might be an effective method but couldn't do that either for the same reason.

In the end, put it in a box and took it to the vets, which only took about 15 mins, and they treat wildlife free of charge. (although wasn't bothered about any cost I would have paid.) But thought a vet was the far better option. I know it's JUST a pigeon, but as an animal lover I can't stand seeing animals hurt or mistreated.

I'll go along with that.

I prefer to cook pigeons whole, wrapped in foil, on gas mark 4 for about two and a hours.

Whenever I go into town and see the resident feral pigeons I look up at them and see dinners.

Digressing my dad used to keep racing pigeons and he always used the lingo associated with the descriptions of the birds i.e checkered hen,red hen, blue c0ck,dark ****,pied hen etc. and any combos in between.
Well last year my dad told the story which I didn't know about when he was asked to take a batch of pigeons to a local primary school as an educational show and tell in the 80's,long story short my dad didn't think to rein in the lingo or make safe choices with his exhibits.
He took a blue c0ck,a dark c0ck,a red c0ck,a pied c0ck and a checkered hen which as you can imagine caused a stir amongst the kids and major embarrassment for the young female teacher who had to mouth the word c0ck when explaining to my dad what was wrong Grin

My old man used to drown them as they suffered least and since most of the birds that were to be culled were in ill health or runty types they died quickly.

Anyone who is mass shooting a load of pigeons not doing any damgage to them is probably not right in the head.
I've no time for such people. If by "railway bridge" I'm guessing right he's plinking off station roosting pigeons on girders?
I know how they sit. How "manly". How "sporty". Not.
People who kill animals for straight fun are imho sick in the head.

BTW I'm a very good shot myself, I could shoot the pee hole out of trilby's whang at 100 paces :)

But the difference is at least he apparently eats them, it's not out of sadism :) But I love wood pigeons,

Two adorable baby pigeons who stowed away on Britain's biggest warship have been flown back ashore to be looked after at a RSPCA rescue centre.

The chicks were discovered in a hidden nest soon after the ship set sail for the US from Portsmouth Naval Base on Saturday.

The pair of motherless birds have been named F-35 and Lightning after the fighter jets which will be tested during the ship's deployment to the USA and are being cared for by the RSPCA in West Hatch near Taunton, Somerset.

The fluffy pigeons were found huddled together by a sailor who heard tweeting coming from a remote ledge high up on one of the ships' boat decks.

The birds were then taken by a navy Merlin MK4 helicopter from 845 Naval Air Squadron.

Finally they were taken back to RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset, where they were handed over to the RSPCA.

Someone cares........
Report blackbarn August 23, 2018 9:57 PM BST

See what you mean, blackbarn. They're always crying the poor tale when I phone them, same as CP, who it turned out had about 12 million invested when the Icelandic banking crisis happened about 10 years ago.
Report blackbarn August 23, 2018 10:57 PM BST
Well, I did not expect ever to be in vague agreement with you Kenny. The problem that all these organisations face is that, of necessity, they need to keep their core audience/contributors happy and paying, but explain that huge numbers of nice creatures are unnecessary and/or surplus to requirements and need to be eliminated.

The RSPB have a different problem. Their mandate is clear, but their "elephant in the room" is that they need to eliminate large numbers of mammals and other birds to protect species requiring specific protection. They do this by what they call "predator control"  This is perfectly reasonable by any reasonable standards but of course killing things to protect things is not what folks expect the RSPB to do.

I will dig out a list of RSPB Predator numbers killed just in case anyone doesn't think it happens.  Some of the numbers (Mink!!) are ridiculously and shamingly low for an organisation committed to protecting birds!!!!!
Report themightymac August 23, 2018 11:48 PM BST
I think the biggest predator to birds is the domestic cat. According to RSPB figures 55 million birds are killed annually by cats. Same source states 275 million prey items are caught by cats each year. That`s a lot of birds, mice, rats, etc.

No because Cleckheaton is south of both Leeds, and Bradford, so not in between, other than would be by time only except,in your contesting,
you have to Leeds as being 50% longer!

On that basis, as I said before, Denby Dale is 45 minutes from both Leeds and Bradford!
