Boris Johnson has stood by his remarks about the burka after the Conservative Party chairman told him to apologise.
The former foreign secretary has been criticised for saying Muslim women wearing burkas "look like letter boxes" and comparing them to "bank robbers". PM Theresa May has backed calls for Mr Johnson to apologise, saying the remarks have "clearly caused offence". But a source close to Mr Johnson said he "won't be apologising", adding it was "ridiculous" to attack his views. "We must not fall into the trap of shutting down the debate on difficult issues," the source added. "We have to call it out. If we fail to speak up for liberal values then we are simply yielding ground to reactionaries and extremists." |

In this day and age I can't understand what possessed him to say it. Especially when the Labour party is on the back foot regarding their anti Semitic problems. Sadly a helpful diversion for them

I was having a conversation in my barbers today. I would find it hard to approach let alone talk to an orthodox Jew the same way as a Muslim in religious gear. Mind you as an atheist I'm not to comfortable around nuns and vicars, priests etc

I thought Bojo's comments were off the cuff but in fact it was an article in the Telegraph..
That tells me he has a back up plan, fully aware of the backlash. I'm guessing his next comment may well be about free speech, je suis charlie etc, the right to debate, make fun of, offend and criticise. He's played a long game for some time now. He has always wanted the top job. He's positioning himself. He jumped onboard Brexit late in the day. He was on the right horse. He's going for the accumulator now with free speech/Islam... |
