The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in central Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift is named after Falkirk, the town in which it is located and is the only lift of this type in the world.
Was there a few years ago, quite a sight and site. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n61KUGDWz2A |

Where the old Somerset Coal Canal joins the Kennet & Avon Canal at Dundas Aqueduct, south of Bath. You'll find several dozen narrow boats moored there.

Did that as a kid with my family. If you get the weather you can't beat a boating holiday. Plenty of pubs along the way ![]() |

One of the best holidays of my life was spent on the Canal du Midi in southern France last year, from Toulouse to Narbonne.
Spectacular scenery, and you get to spend some time in some beautiful French towns and villages. |

I visited Carcassonne in the Summer of 2016. The Canal du Midi is lovely
![]() A book I can highly recommend is Narrow Dog to Carcassonne by Terry Darlington. Terry, his wife, and their dog took their Narrowboat across the English Channel (scary) and down through France to Carcassonne. It's brilliant and very funny. I wonder if Terry is still alive I will try and find out. |

Canal du Midi looks lovely, featured on celebrity five go boating. Must say I fancy some of that along with Penny Smith

This is his website
. http://www.narrowdog.com/index.html Still can't find out if he and his wife are still alive. I remember reading the last posting on his website a long time ago. I'm fearing the worst ![]() Terry Darlington's book about their narrowboat adventures in the USA is equally brilliant. |

Yes, that was brilliant, Dan. I love Penny Smith

Kennyman says you forgot 'a cat' between 'a plan' and 'a canal'.

Where does the water for canals come from? Is it fresh water? How deep are they? Do canals eventually go out to sea?
|
|
By:
London should be added to the list. I've never done it myself but used to work next to the canal at King's Cross and there were quite a few boats using it since the canals were cleaned up.

|
By:
Yes also Little Venice Part of the Grand union , Strangely there were also a Lot Parked up being used as houseboats next to Battersea bridge. Not sure if they are still there ..

Canal boats have become a cheaper alternative to buying a property for many people.

I vaguely remember the dude from Steptoe & Son being in a movie about canal boats.

The Bargee. Vaguely remember it.

The Dude from Steptoe & Son starred in The Bargee, which from hazy recollection was not very good. Eric Sykes was in it as well.
