Along with steam trains I also have a thing for canal boats. Even just canals without the boats interests me.

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in central Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift is named after Falkirk, the town in which it is located and is the only lift of this type in the world.

Was there a few years ago, quite a sight and site.

Where the old Somerset Coal Canal joins the Kennet & Avon Canal at Dundas Aqueduct, south of Bath. You'll find several dozen narrow boats moored there.

For the bit more adventurous try a canal boat on a wide river like the Trent.

Did that as a kid with my family. If you get the weather you can't beat a boating holiday. Plenty of pubs along the way Cool

One of the best holidays of my life was spent on the Canal du Midi in southern France last year, from Toulouse to Narbonne.
Spectacular scenery, and you get to spend some time in some beautiful French towns and villages.

I visited Carcassonne in the Summer of 2016. The Canal du Midi is lovely Love

A book I can highly recommend is Narrow Dog to Carcassonne by Terry Darlington. Terry, his wife, and their dog took their Narrowboat across the English Channel (scary) and down through France to Carcassonne.

It's brilliant and very funny. I wonder if Terry is still alive Confused I will try and find out.

This is his website

Still can't find out if he and his wife are still alive. I remember reading the last posting on his website a long time ago. I'm fearing the worst Sad

Terry Darlington's book about their narrowboat adventures in the USA is equally brilliant.

Where does the water for canals come from? Is it fresh water? How deep are they? Do canals eventually go out to sea?

London should be added to the list. I've never done it myself but used to work next to the canal at King's Cross and there were quite a few boats using it since the canals were cleaned up.

Canal boats have become a cheaper alternative to buying a property for many people.

The Dude from Steptoe & Son starred in The Bargee, which from hazy recollection was not very good. Eric Sykes was in it as well.
