Scotland Yard said the 39-year-old woman was detained on Tuesday and had been bailed to return on a date in late August while they investigate further.

It is claimed she is neither a survivor of the tragedy nor someone left bereaved, but attempted to fraudulently get her hands on cash meant for those affected.

The arrest follows a wave of convictions against fraudsters who attempted to profit from the disaster.

A man yesterday pleaded guilty to claiming £81,000 in money and accommodation by pretending he lived in the tower before the devastating fire last June.

Yonatan Eyob, 26, from Notting Hill, admitted fraud by false representation at Westminster Magistrates’ Court

The Metropolitan Police confirmed five people have so far been convicted on fraud-related charges, five further suspects have been charged and "a number of other investigations are ongoing".

A spokeswoman added: "The Met will continue to investigate anyone thought to be fraudulently profiting from the tragic event.".

Tip of the iceberg. Staggering amounts of money and staggering how easy it seems obtaining it.

surely the council should know who every tenant of their bulding is?

Just shows the dangers of emotional reporting whenever a tragedy occurs, the left bear some responsibility for the hysteria surround this abuse. The authorities were being emotionally blackmailed into offering an open cheque book for appeasement.
Report treetop August 2, 2018 10:41 PM BST
Callisto,I watched an interesting programme on morning TV a couple of years ago and it was a frequent case of tenants sub letting their council flats to one or more other families/immigrants that made it impossible to track occupancy details. The hysteria of the moment would have stopped any council official 'accusing tenants' of such abuse but it appears to have happened at Grenfell in some fashion.

A 33-year-old man has been charged with fraudulently obtaining money meant for Grenfell Tower survivors and bereaved families.
Antonio Gouveia is charged with two counts of fraud by false representation and will appear in court later.

Residents told Council on numerous occasions, over a period of years about safety concerns. Council and Theresa May's Government made a complete hash of their responsibilities and the fraudsters taking advantage is indicative of a bad strategy, badly administered.
