He was involved in some very brutal fights - especially against Lesnevich and Baksi.
I read his biography many years ago and a lot was made of his headaches. He was always happy to take five or six punches to land one good one of his own. He also often fought genuine heavyweights despite only being a light-heavy himself.

Very interesting, especially Pete Murray's descriptions of Mills's life as a celebrity (and the state of his restaurant's kitchen: infested with mice and cockroaches).
The programme put to bed the myths that Mills was responsible for the Jack the Stripper murders, or that he was killed for not paying protection money.
The new claim, from Huntman's son, was that Mills was killed by the mafia, who wanted to expand into London casinos. Mills was going skint and made a clumsy attempt at blackmailing Benny Huntman by threatening to go to the papers about his mafia links. Meyer Lansky therefore arranged for Mills to be murdered.
I'm not convinced, and nor did Mills's son seem to be. For a start, it needs the hitman to have known Mills had a gun, to wrestle it from him, then shoot him. Second, did the mafia ever take over Soho?
Suicide still seems more likely, and the only reason given for doubting it is that the family thought it out of character -- but then families invariably do -- and that he was shot in the eye.

I've never been a boxing fan but thought the documentary was fascinating. My conclusion would be an underworld hit and Richardson knows more than he was letting on...my only question is of the picture of mills dead in the car and the position of the shotgun..was that where the police found the gun or did they place it there?

Great programme - the Bournemouth milkman - there is a large plaque to him in Littledown leisure centre in Bournemouth, oh, and BBC4 is one the best channels out there.
Some of those blows in those fights would never be allowed today.
My dad, being a local man, worshipped the guy.

It was a .22 calibre rifle borrowed from a fairground friend. not a shotgun. But might of had trouble penetrating the scull. (i am no expert). could enplane why if you intended to kill your self, youd maybe point it in your eye..
What about Pete Murray? never expected him to still be alive... only slightly bewildered...
