The system is making sure that is the case I have one in my family who gets his life paid for because he is a drug addict and learned some of the psychological tricks so this continues from his pals and incarceration stints.

I'm watching this now obviously the schitzo lad Chris is a very sad case but what we are seeing is an 'end product' there would've been 100s if not 1000s of episodes for him to get to this stage, the country's zero blame attitude along the way ensures that nobody takes any responsibilty for their own actions as all behaviour gets validated in one way or another.

Absolutely brutal to watch, especially the first part.
Seems like the problems are exacerbated by austerity - no staff, no beds etc. |
|
By:
That was incredible wasn't it 6 staff looking after 250 inmates.

You'd have to assume that every prison is like that too. They need medical help, not locking up.

I was on about the first programme btw.
Yes the lad with the screws in the knuckles was extreme but maybe not so when you're high as a kite, they showed what were genuine cases but plenty playing the game in my area and that sort of behaviour guarantees an easier time in prison,a way out and benefits, housing and sick pay ensured on the outside. |

Got no qualms about the 1st episode. People make a career out of getting locked up "stuffed"
2nd was sick. How can those guys, who are clearly mentally ill, give permission to be filmed? Parts of it are unwatchable - the only takeaway is that the prison service is chronically underfunded. As is every other public service, I don't want to politicise it but this all on the tories. Austerity clearly isn't working. |

Probably no panacea but clearly investment wouldn't hurt. It seems like a lot of them get trapped in a grey area.
The psychosis is often drug induced and goes away with time. Maybe more investment in community drug projects would help. The money seems to be there for trident and yankee fighter jets..... |

Indeed when there's 0 chance of a nuclear war
![]() The problem with investing in these types is that they see you as a soft touch and a validator of their behaviour and they'll lie and steal their way into getting more and more. When my relative found out his mate was on top whack sick pay for being a drug addict he did all he could to get sectioned but ended up in jail so had to go lower and lower to get into the position he's in life fully paid for. He drinks, gambles, takes drugs, deals drugs every day he's as sane as the next person but extremely devious and self centred and having spent long periods of time with him when he's been escaping people who are after him know some of the ins and outs. |

seemed a decent lad...those supposed to be helping him came across as beyond useless..how was he not being monitored? One of the most traumatic things i've watched. |

Hard to blame the staff imo.
Just another public service being asked to do more with less. Clear that there's a huge drug problem in prisons and they're also suffering from the under-funding of the NHS and Social Services so that many people who should be getting treatment are instead locked up and kept out of sight and mind. One of the big functions of prison is rehabilitation. Of making prisoners better people when they leave so they can re-integrate into society and live crime-free lives. Chances are slimmer than ever. And it's the tip of the iceberg. Got a good friend who has worked for years in probation. Some of the horror stories of the government's changes and the impacts they've had would give you sleepless nights. Still, some people made a profit from it while those affected weren't from the right class. |
