Madeley passed away today
FOOTBALL LEGEND: Madeley passed away today following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease

Madeley, who began and ended his professional career with Leeds, passed away today after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

The legendary footballer's passing was confirmed by his former Championship club in a statement tonight.

"Everyone at Leeds United is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of legend Paul Madeley," the club said.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

A statement released by Madeley’s family said: “Paul Madeley passed away peacefully today surrounded by his family in Leeds.

“Paul was a much-loved husband, father and brother and the family are extremely proud of his achievements in life and on the field for Leeds United and England.

“He was born in Beeston, a stone’s throw from Elland Road, and only ever played and supported Leeds United.

“The late Don Revie christened him his ‘Roll Royce’ and to us he was just that - a class act as a husband and a father who always had time for everyone he met.

“Paul’s wife Ann and sons Jason and Nick would like to thank everyone for their support and well wishes. At this difficult time we ask for privacy as we grieve a great loss.”

LEGEND: Madeley was dubbed the 'Rolls Royce of Don Revie’s legendary Leeds United squad'

Madeley made 727 appearances during his 18-year stint at Elland Road, and played in every position except goalkeeper.

He won league championship, FA Cup, League Cup and Inter-City Fairs Cup honours – all on top of being a European Cup and Cup-Winners' Cup finalist.

He scored 34 goals and also won 24 England caps, with his last cap coming against the Netherlands in 1977.

Very sad news. Was lucky to see him play and what a terrific player he was. A credit to Leeds and England and the human race. RIP

What a player.

I do wonder if he was born at the right time.

His abilities would be so well served in the modern game.

As a 15 year old I followed Leeds everywhere, and the firm I was apprenticed to did work for Manny Cousins, who suppliedcthe players with everything. We worked in all the houses of my heroes, I till remember thinking 'that's posh' when I saw that Paul Reaney kept Kit Kats in the fridge Laugh. RIP Mr Madeley.
