Totally agree twizzle sir. If ale has a hint of cold about it it's a no from me. Has to be warm.
The colder it is the less you can appreciate the taste. It's why lager & cider companies encourage ice - to make up for the lack of taste.

I used to enjoy a pint or two of Guinness until they brought out the extra cold version. Most pubs used to serve both types but I've noticed that more and more are selling the extra cold only. It is totally devoid of any taste and I refuse to drink it.

At the risk of pronouncing heresy and I will say it for the record...
This house is of the belief that ale can be served cool from a cellar!
There I said it!

The temperature of real ale is a very sensitive subject. You must NOT serve it cold - there are clear guidlines on it and cellars(the old fashioned way) are kept at particular temperatures for it.
There are such things as flash coolers above the cellars and all sorts of other newer systems to cool lager and real ale too etc but you must NEVER over-cool real ale. Basically, the colder the less taste.

If it comes out of the cellar it is probably going to be at the right temperature. If we are talking ale. The room temperature thing is a bit of a misnomer because traditionally it would have been at room temperature but because we are now a nation of softies, 'room temperature' means 70C to some people.
Different styles of beer including lager styles should be served at different temperatures.
