The 1954 World Cup was organized by idiots.
For some unknown reason, teams only played 2 of the 3 teams in their group, with a play off deciding the progression of teams with equal points (there was no goal difference) If this wasn't bad enough, the 4 group winners played each other in the quarters and semis, as did the 4 runners up. West Germany played a reserve side in the first game against Hungary, knowing that coming runners up in the group would give them an easier run to the final. They also kicked lumps out of Puskas , so he was only half fit for the final. The 2026 finals are also to be organized by idiots. ![]() 3 team groups will mean that in a lot of cases the 2 teams that play the last game can contrive a result that puts both teams through. |

Wow that is a lot of idiots.
If you look carefully, you will notice that the difference between 2026 and 1956 is exactly 72 years. Donald Trump's age is also 72 years. |

BTW mmm I'd be surprised if WG did play weakened team as the loss forced them into an extra play-off match with Turkey.

In reply to Akabula , Germany made 7 changes
from their opening game against Turkey. They then played all but one of the original team for the play-off. The quarter final between Uruguay and Brazil was refereed by Arthur Ellis of “Its a knockout” game ![]() For the original question I think Brazil played Turkey twice in 2002. |

"The FIFA World Cup was first broadcast on television in 1954 and is now the most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the Olympic Games." "VAR is bullsh*t" in 100s of languages. |
