Some commentators were taking Melania’s choice of attire as a politically calculated move.
Amnesty International’s US branch tweeted they were “shook by the blatant lack of empathy” the first lady demonstrated when she chose to wear the jacket.
The actor and outspoken Trump critic Patricia Arquette tweeted “Melania Trump just won worst dressed for the century.”
Many have praised Melania for seeming to diverge from Donald Trump’s attitude on separating children from their families.
On Sunday, while the president was still defending the policy, her communications director released a statement saying the first lady “hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform”.
It’s not clear whether this jacket is a nod to those concerned that she is being too soft on immigration, sending some sort of message as her husband claimed, or was some sort of wardrobe malfunction.
It is, however, unusual for Melania Trump to wear inexpensive clothes when on public business. At the G7 summit last year, she wore a floral coat worth $51,000. While arriving back from a trip last June, she was spotted carrying an overnight bag: a Hermès Birkin bag worth $13,500.
Despite the controversy it caused, when Melania returned to Andrews airforce base later in the afternoon she was still wearing the jacket in front of reporters.

THe policy of splitting families up IF they were processed as illegal immigrants was put in place pre trump. But Obama, hand wringing leftie that he was, just let them go again, catch and release, so they didn't have to apply this policy. The reason it's now applied is because Trump isn't letting the parents go and this is a side effect of it, he didn't actually bring in the policy because he hates kids....

If you travel to a foreign country with the intention of breaking the law, don't take your children with you as they don't exempt you from the consequences of your actions.

Seems entirely fair to separate parents from children if the parents are breaking the law by trying to enter USA illegally.Parents should be sent to prison;kids returned to country of origin. Warnings have been given and the illegals know the riks.If they're caught they should pay the penalty...
Trump administration has been stopping people from legally claiming asylum in US by stopping them at the border. While this is illegal, the govt has given a perfectly valid excuse, namely, they are only temporarily returning people as they don't have any space to accommodate them, asking them to come at a later time. Did you hear about this? Probably not. Is this effective in discouraging asylum seekers? Of course it is.
Now compare that to the separation policy. Yesterday I had a chat with an american, about violence and immigrants. I don't remember what the exact question was, but his answer to that was "If you look carefully, you will see that all the cities suffering from violence are controlled by the democrats"
For the americans, all of their issues are either the democrats fault or the republicans. The actual issue is not relevant, the perpetrators of those issues being dem or rep is more important. The media covers stories the same way. Over the course of their history, I am sure both the democrats and republicans sat down at some point and realized that the people were always going to blame either of their parties so why no just divide the issues amongst themselves and keep the people busy?

I don't know the truth. Parents are sending kids unaccompanied and are at risk of explotation. Same as in Europe.

The similarity with the photo of the dead child on the beach is startling. Policy is now made on the basis of how much emotion can be generated by the media which is therefore wide open to abuse. The ease that public opinion can be manipulated is frightening.
