The lorry also had a nail bomb inside which failed to detonate.  The attacker was sentenced to life imprisonment today.  For Sweden, that means 16 years in a place that is better than some hotels.

From your link.

Akilov, a rejected asylum seeker, fled the scene but was quickly arrested and confessed during police interrogation.
He left Uzbekistan for Sweden in 2014 and sought residency there, but in December 2016 he was told that he had four weeks to leave the country.

Appalling sentence and why aren't these people detained before expulsion.

In Sweden "life in prison" can mean 16 years (24-25 years and then a 1/3 discount for good behaviour = 16-17 years), but in exceptional cases it can be quite a bit longer, and this counts as an exceptional case. In 2016 one guy was released after 34 years in prison and that was for double murder and arson. That's the current record for modern times. Nobody knows yet if and when he will be released, but Akilov the terrorist should have a good chance of beating the 34 years-record. Crazy that he has a chance of ever being released at all, but expect 30 years+ at least.

Considering these religious nutters really do believe they will ascend to paradise as martyrs, I doubt the quality of Sweden's prisons is a major factor.
