Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre is stepping down after 26 years in the role.

He will become chairman of Associated Newspapers, which is owned by the company DMGT, and its editor-in-chief.

Associated also owns the Mail on Sunday and the successful Mail Online, the most visited English-language newspaper website in the world.
Mr Dacre, the Evening Standard editor before joining the Mail, starts his new job before turning 70 in November.

Lord Rothermere, chairman of DMGT, paid tribute to Mr Dacre for his "brilliant stewardship" of the Mail and other titles in the group over three decades.
]
"Paul is, quite simply, the greatest Fleet Street editor of his generation not only for his huge circulation successes on both the Mail and the Standard but also for the sheer power of his many campaigns, investigations and crusades that have held power to account, given a voice to the voiceless and often set the political agenda through six prime ministerships," he said.

Under Mr Dacre's editorship the Daily Mail has taken a staunchly pro-Brexit line. Last November the paper controversially attacked three senior judges after they ruled that Brexit could not be triggered without a Westminster vote in a front-page story headlined "Enemies of the people".

Despite a sharp fall in newspaper sales in recent years, the Mail still sells an average of 1.28 million copies a day as its mix of politics, campaigns and celebrity news continues to appeal to millions of readers.

The Sun remains the UK's highest-selling daily newspaper, however, shifting 1.49 million copies a day in April.

Mr Dacre has long been Britain's best-paid newspaper editor, earning almost £2.5m last year. That was more than 50% higher than the previous year due to a £856,000 payout under DMGT's long-term incentive plan, which is linked to its share price.

He joined DMGT as the Mail's New York bureau chief after writing for Express Newspapers.

Wiki :

Private life :

While he was a student at Leeds University, Dacre met his future wife, Kathleen,[2][15] now a professor of drama studies.[7] Both of their two sons attended Eton;[2][37] James is a theatre director,[158][159] while their other son is a businessman.[18]

For many years, Dacre has been the highest-paid newspaper editor in Britain. In 2008, Dacre received £1.62 million in salary and cash payments, an increase from the £1.49 million of the previous year.[160] According to the DMGT annual report for 2017, Dacre's total income from the group amounted to £2.37 million, including a salary of £1.45m and an additional £856,000 as part of the company's Long-Term Investment Plan (LTIP).

His total DGMT remuneration increased by 56% over payments made during 2016. Dacre's pension scheme, which began in 1979 and is no longer paid into by the group, pays him £708,000 a year.[161]

Dacre's London home is in Belgravia. For his other properties, a large farm in West Sussex and the 17,000 acre Langwell Estate near Ullapool in the Scottish highlands,[37] Dacre has benefited from subsidies under the Common Agricultural Policy from the European Union. In 2014, he received £88,000 for the two holdings and under the exchange rate of late March 2016, he is believed to have received £460,000 since 2011.[162]

BBC (who hate him as he is against all the damage to this country they actively support) showed their bias on the news last night.
They interviewed one person on this story, fellow left winger Alistair Campbell who gave him a vicious broadside.

What does Campbell do these days anyway? I'd have thought he'd have strolled staight into a job in left wing / pro EU propaganda at the BBC?
Maybe head of news and BBC newspeak?

What's your point Leopard, he works for a private company that AFAIK at a time of newspapers (like the pathetic Guardian) struggling has managed to keep his newspaper healthy. We're not forced to apy his salary. I'm sure he works quite hard for it. Compare and contrast the OBSCENCE levels of salary the BBC were shown to be giving people for sitting and reading a teleprompter, or hosting Match of the Day one day a week for part of the year.

Dacre replaced by Geordie Greig, current editor of the Mail On Sunday - a dish-faced, old-Etonian David Cameron lookalike and, according to Private Eye, a personal favourite of the proprietor's wife. Also a rabid Remainer, hence all the anti-Brexiteer headlines in the Mail On Sunday.

Appears, like all Remainers, to be driven by a sneering contempt for the views of working people. Unable to forgive them for having had the cheek to demonstrate their wider and superior experience of the world via the ballot box.

Nah,not in the same street as Campbell ! Read his book and constantly at Blair for not being left wing enough although still driving his policies through, as part of his job. You worry me that only extreme lefties are acceptable,if Campbell isn't ok there must be 90 % of the UK population agin you anx.

Can't believe people are suggesting Campbell is Left wing. It shouldn't surprise me though as it's a clear tactic of the far right to label anyone with a remotely central opinion as left wing as they know they will struggle to win the actual debate.
