Dennis Andrew Nilsen (23 November 1945 – 12 May 2018)[1] was a British serial killer and necrophile, also known as the Muswell Hill Murderer and the Kindly Killer, who murdered at least 15[2] young men in a series of killings committed between 1978 and 1983 in London, England. Convicted of six counts of murder and two of attempted murder at the Old Bailey,[3] Nilsen was sentenced to life imprisonment on 4 November 1983, with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 25 years.[4] He was most recently incarcerated at HMP Full Sutton maximum security prison in Full Sutton in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England.

All of Nilsen's murders were committed in two North London addresses in which he alternately resided throughout the years he is known to have killed. His victims were lured to these addresses through guile and murdered by strangulation, sometimes accompanied by drowning. Following the murders, Nilsen observed a ritual in which he bathed and dressed the victims' bodies, which he retained for extended periods of time, before dissecting and disposing of them via burning upon a bonfire, or flushing down a lavatory.

Nilsen became known as the Muswell Hill Murderer as his later murders were committed in the Muswell Hill district of North London; he also became known as the Kindly Killer, in reference to his belief that his method of murder was the most humane.[5] Owing to the similar modus operandi of the murderers, Nilsen has been described as the "British Jeffrey Dahmer".[6] He died in prison on the 12th May, 2018.

Hi DP, I don't have a fascination with serial killers, even though I used to drink in the same local as the Black Panther. My pal lived next door to him, and I knew his wife and daughter well, but have no recollection of Neilson (same name, different spelling)

I can't imagine a world with no CCTV, DNA or ANPR.  It must have been so much easier to get away with crimes back then.

No fascination for me either kenny but enjoy the documentaries like 'Inside the mind of a serial killer' and the like.
I've seen that one as well (Black Panther) he used to be in the army from what I remember and was a meticulous planner of his attacks.
I live 2 doors away and played with a murderer as a child (seemed normal as an adult too) I think he started taking taking drugs and had psychological effects, very quiet parents in fact his dad passed away about a month ago.

There are survivors of Nilsen who've played dead and got away but didn't report the incidents due to the stigma of being gay he really should've been caught very early on,it was a plumber who finally did for him with body matter blocking pipes and drains.

Last year I was at my brother in laws funeral and at the reception a woman approached me, and said, you're kenny aren't you? We got chatting and she was the sister of my old mate who lived next to the BPanther. By quite a coincidence it turned out she goes walking with my neice,my brother in laws daughter, who had told her I'd be attending the funeral. I hadn;t seen her for 50 years.

We got chatting and she told me of the time her mum threw a bucket of water over BP. He had a habit of burning rubbish in his back garden every time she hung her washing out, resulting in the smoke spoiling the clean washing. This went on several times, and eventually she said if this happens again, I'll throw a bucket of water over the fire. Well he did and apparently the water went over him.

What's extremely common with serial killers is an underlying sexual illness (95%+ I think in US) there was a guy called Ed Kemper (The Co Ed Killer) who was particularly disturbing and it all came from childhood and his sexual realisation,a good documentary if you come across it.

There is a good book "Killing for company" about Nilsen.  I read it because I lived just down the road from his flat in Willesden Green.  I think he'd might have moved the time I was there.

I have no recollection of the Black Panther at all, DP. It was only after his gruesome deeds came to light that people said to me, "you'll have known him, always stood on his own, never really spoke to anyone".

As I said I did know his wife and daughter well, as they shopped at an off license near me, as well as living next to my mate. Wife was extremely quiet, and the poor daughter was covered in spots. She'd have been maybe 14, about 12 years younger than me.

stood on his own in the Junction pub, that is, Leeds Road just outside Pudsey. Now demolished, which is a shame, as it was a terrific local.
