Say that someone tells you an acquaintance has died, is there a death list or something similar to check rather than just taking one person's word for it?

I think it's one of the lines, people dare not cross. If you are told someone has died, take it as read.
Even by todays standards nobody would tell lies on that subject.

Once decomposition sets in, you can be fairly sure.

If in hospital paying for a death certificate Plain when my father in law passed away some years ago I was informed by a couple of junior doctors that there would be a £60 fee for a death certificate as it's a big responsibility pronouncing someone dead Crazy I responded that we'd go for a cup of tea and if he hadn't moved we could take it as read that he passed away Mischief I would add while I was being flippant I held my father in law in the highest regard. A true gentleman. Have to admit I was p1ssed off that the BHS wanted money once you die Angry

She had a court case coming up that she was deeply concerned and worried about speaking at.  All we have is her husband's word that he went out, came home and found her dead.  Says it's defo not suicide.  She wouldn't be the first to try getting away from life's problems by apparently dying.

I don't think a husband would make that up.

Mind you, there are some odd folk about. Lybertyne must have reasons for doubting it. I remember some years ago, a workmate said he needed a day off to go to his mother's funeral. It was a blatant lie. He went to the racing.

Not long ago I wasn't sure if someone had died. My first idea was to phone the local crematorium to see if a funeral had been arranged which there wasn't. They advised me to contact the local Coroner's Office which I did. They told me straight away that he had passed away. So contact them.

All deaths are registered, unless they are a dead missing person that's not presumed dead.  Can't imagine the husband could register the death with no dead body.  Laugh  Up to the coroner to decide if there's suspicious circumstances.
