Such a wonderful film, I've got it on record tonight but I've seen it a few times before. A very solid 9/10 job with the thumb.

Read the book before watching the film, then read the 2nd book,Banco which was how he lived his life in Venezuela and eventually made his way back to France. Quiet enjoyable but I've always remembered it to be a somewhat rambling account of his later life, probably not surprising after the years he spent banged up.

Good film. There's something pleasurable about watching suffering whilst oneself is comfortable, well fed and enjoying a nice drink.

topshot... I started reading Banco on holiday. Must've been 15 or 20 years ago now. Didn't get to the end. Yes, I enjoyed it but probably quite a "sedate" follow-up to Papillon from what I remember. One of those now that I couldn't pick up where I left off, but couldn't bring myself to go back to the start. Think the Papillon in my head is set to spend the rest of his days in Venezuelan purgatory.

The real Papillon lived until he was 105, dying in 2007.
