I expect it will be like a shrine to some we've seen on here over the years!
Report STUDYFORM April 19, 2018 9:34 PM BST
And certainly a theme for some.
Even if thickly veiled.

yes i've been to Berchtesgaden many times. I don't live far from there. But i've never been to the Eagle's nest. Only seen it from as far as the free bus took me :) There was a bunker of his highness at the spot I went to and you could see the Eagle's nest from there. I have heard there is a lift that goes vertically up from the base to the top of the cliff where the nest is(if i'm not confusing it with some other place). But I never gave a feck about it.

There are 4-5 spots to visit in Bechtesgaden. Sadly there's just one bus an hour to each of those destinations from the train station. So you'll only be able to manage one per day, unless you are there for the first bus or have your own car.

Konigsee is also nice and you can view the Watzmann from there. The boat trip is about 15 euros per person I think(Eagle's nest might cost same or slightly less). If you like trekking and mountains, it could be a nice idea to spend you day there. At the second(and last) stop of the boat, you can take a further walk along another small lake and then view some mountains and waterfall. The last boat back leaves at about 4, after that you're fkd.

Yep. Thickly veiled.

God this thread takes me back.

I went to Germany on a school trip as a thirteen year old and we stayed in a place called the Sport Hotel, in Konigsee.
Bavaria isn't it?
I feel sure that we did visit the Eagle's nest, A salt mine in Salzburg , and various other places.
All so long ago now.
My only memory of the Eagle's nest is being outside in a very thick fog. It's so high up. Hence the name Eagle's nest I suppose.

Poor Adolf; one of history's born losers and lionised by some on here.  The irony...

I suppose it could, and probably IS, regarded by some as a kind of shrine. I just remember it as very polished and perfectly preserved and , like small pieces of ww11 trenches that are preserved in France, I think that's a GOOD thing.

It's not a shrine, but it's a good viewing point of a spectacular area. There isn't THAT much to it, he didn't spend much time there, was more AFIAK a place to have meetings and show it off (he was given it as a present).  There is not thing nazi about it, it's got a cafe for bus parties of pensioners to have a bit of cake admiring theview.

"not thing" - my English is slipping .. then again I only really started learning it when I had my time freed up after a few years of intense activity  ... in Argentina in 1946 ... Wink

The paratroopers portrayed in Band of Brothers were there when the Germans surrendered, I'll assume you've seen the series but probably forgot.

And I believe had a bit of a p1ss up on expensive nazi wine ExcitedExcitedExcited.

It wasn't filmed there but it does look like that inside. The US troops famously chipped bits of stone off Hitler's fireplace to take home momentos :)
