“Retribution” is the new album from Sweden’s Nightingale, the intended one-off project that refuses to die. Established by musical multi-talent Dan Swanö almost 20 years ago, the band is proof that good music can take on a life of its own, often when the artist least expects it.

Disturbed’s cover of ‘The Sound of Silence’ has nearly 30 million views on YouTube, and comments full of testimonials like “haunting”, “stunning”, and “God, his voice make me an erection“. It’s Disturbed’s biggest hit since 2000’s ‘Down with the Sickness’. Triple M and mainstream rock radio are flogging it; the band recently performed it on Conan with a string section, looking very serious. Impressive, right? So why does the song sound like the dude from Creed grunting over an orchestra? Why are so many people moved by it?
With ‘The Sound of Silence’, Simon & Garfunkel warned us about the dangers of a society without empathy. It was the right protest song at the right time, a brooding anthem for the Vietnam generation. By covering it Disturbed also position themselves as cultural prophets, diagnosing the ills of society – while missing the point completely. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4 |

"Innuendo" is a 1991 single by the British rock band Queen. Written by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor but credited to Queen, it is the opening track on the album of the same name, and was released as the first single from the album. The single went straight to Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart in January 1991.[2]
At six and a half minutes, it is one of Queen's epic songs and their longest ever released as a single, exceeding "Bohemian Rhapsody" by 35 seconds. The song has been described as "reminiscent" of "Bohemian Rhapsody" because it was "harking back to their progressive rock roots".[1] It features a flamenco guitar section performed by Yes guitarist Steve Howe and Brian May,[3][4] an operatic interlude and sections of hard rock that recall early Queen, in addition to lyrics inspired in part by lead singer Freddie Mercury's illness; although media stories about his health were being strenuously denied, he was by now seriously ill with AIDS, which would claim his life in November 1991, 10 months after the single was released. Accompanied by a music video featuring animated representations of the band on a cinema screen akin to Nineteen Eighty-Four, eerie plasticine figure stop-motion and harrowing imagery, it has been described as one of the band's darkest and most moving works.[5] AllMusic described the song as a "superb epic", which deals with "mankind's inability to live harmoniously".[6] . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2N0TkfrQhY |

Love Innuendo, though I find Queen very tiresome in general.
Think I must be the only one left, but I really don't like Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence. Just misses all the subtlety of the original. |

It's all about opinions nobody is right or wrong. I think with Queen you are either a fan for life or think they're pretty naff. Never thought they got the recognition musically they deserved. Having said that I think they made a lot of mistakes in their choice of direction but in a way that's why I admired them.
Loved Disturbed's version and because of them got to discover a great song written by Paul Simon. |

“Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” is a strophic classic blues which takes the 12 bar structure and stretches to the limit by using an inventive melodic line.
What Dylan here is gives a nightmare story incorporating other nightmares through quick references. This, Dylan is saying, is the nightmare of the real meaning of the blues, taken on 30 years from the days of Robert Johnson. Georgia on My Mind
The song was written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics). Although it is frequently asserted that the lyrics were written not about the state of Georgia but rather for Carmichael's sister, Georgia Carmichael,[3] Carmichael contradicted this view in his second autobiography, Sometimes I Wonder. He wrote that the song was composed when bandleader Frankie Trumbauer suggested that he write about the state of Georgia. According to Carmichael, Trumbauer also suggested the opening lyrics should be "Georgia, Georgia ...", with the remaining lyrics coming from Gorrell. Carmichael made no mention of his sister. THE FIGHTER by IN THIS MOMENT
This is a track from In This Moment's fifth album, Black Widow. Frontwoman Maria Brink said: "This song is about rising to our fullest power and overcoming tragedy." Asked by Berlin TV to what extent the lyrics on Black Widow are autobiographical, Brink replied: "It's usually mostly about my personal experiences. I just like to put into a metaphorical-type way. 'Cause I always have to write from personal things just so I can make sure that I'm connected to it, 'cause I think that's the magic in music. You have to make sure that I feel it, 'cause if I feel it, then other people feel it. So I think if you lack that emotional connection, then you lose that magic. So it is all in my experiences, but trying to do 'em in different… with using my imagination." The video was directed by photographer Jeremy Saffer and Maria Brink. Said the singer: "I decided to do a stripped down, intimate video to go with the nature and the meaning of the song. I wanted to show everybody a more vulnerable side of myself and take out all the bells and whistles." . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3sg1sDhX0U |

"Out in the Fields" is a single by former Thin Lizzy band members Gary Moore and Phil Lynott, released in 1985. The song is about the Troubles in Northern Ireland.[1]
The song is reminiscent of the sound of their band and is influenced by both artists' wide musical palettes. It performed well critically as well as commercially, reaching #3 in the Irish Singles Chart[2] and #5 on the UK Singles Chart,[3] the highest positions either of the two would ever reach in their solo careers, and the highest UK singles chart position of Lynott's entire career, both with and without Thin Lizzy. "Out in the Fields" was also one of the last recordings made by Phil Lynott before his death on 4 January 1986.[1] . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsKpazeA5L8 |

A BIG thing for me is songs written by the artist themselves.
Artists that don't take the easy way out. Artists that sit down with a blank page and pen and create their own magic. These are the true musicians in my eyes. The ones that should be at the top of the lists. If you don't write the song yourself it takes away from the strength of the effect of the song in my eyes. David Keenan is one of these such artists who does it all himself. He is one of Ireland's greatest at the minute. Supremely talented with a story to tell. He is currently on a tour of Ireland and also plays 2 dates in the UK next month. 19th May in Brighton at The Great Escape Festival and 23rd May at The Islington, London. I don't believe Festivals would be the best place to see him as one of his strengths is his lyrical content. If you can get a chance to see him live in an intimate venue I would highly recommend it. He is also booked for 12 dates in New York this summer. Every single time I see him he raises the bar with his performance. Here is one of his latest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMVcbSeA91A |

From the album Bat Out Of Hell The album developed from a musical, Neverland, a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan, which Steinman wrote for a workshop in 1974, and performed at the Kennedy Center Music Theatre Lab in 1977.[8][9] Steinman and Meat Loaf, who were touring with the National Lampoon show, felt that three songs were "exceptional" and Steinman began to develop them as part of a seven-song set they wanted to record as an album.[10] The three songs were "Bat Out of Hell", "Heaven Can Wait" and "The Formation of the Pack", which was later retitled "All Revved Up with No Place to Go". "Sid Vicious in a Dress" is the lead single off Powerman 5000's New Wave album.
“Over the years, Sid Vicious has become the poster child for chaos and destruction. The video takes that concept and manifests it into the form of a beautiful girl. "One" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the third track from their 1991 album Achtung Baby, and it was released as the record's third single in February 1992. During the album's recording sessions at Hansa Studios in Berlin, conflict arose between the band members over the direction of U2's sound and the quality of their material. Tensions almost prompted the band to break up until they achieved a breakthrough with the improvisation of "One"; the song was written after the band members were inspired by a chord progression that guitarist the Edge was playing in the studio. The lyrics, written by lead singer Bono, were inspired by the band members' fractured relationships and the German reunification. Although the lyrics ostensibly describe "disunity", they have been interpreted in other ways.
"One" was released as a benefit single, with proceeds going towards AIDS research. The song topped the Irish Singles Charts and US Billboard Album Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks charts, and it peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. In promotion of the song, the band filmed several music videos, although they were not pleased until a third was created. The song was acclaimed by critics upon its release, and it has since been featured in polls of the greatest songs of all time. U2 has performed "One" at most of their tour concerts since the song's live debut in 1992, and it has appeared in many of the band's concert films. In a live setting, "One" is often used by the group to promote human rights or social justice causes, and the song lends its namesake to Bono's charitable organisation, the ONE Campaign. In 2005, U2 re-recorded the song as part of a duet with R&B recording artist Mary J. Blige on her album The Breakthrough. To the best of my knowledge this is the only time I've really gotten into a song mainly because of watching the video. What a fantastic, beautiful and powerful performance from Mary. "Juke Box Hero" is a song written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones and performed by their band Foreigner, from their 1981 album 4. It first entered the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in July 1981. Released as the album's third single in early 1982, it subsequently went to #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[1]
Although the physical 45 sold less than 500,000 copies, 'Juke Box Hero' has been certified platinum by the RIAA for over a million digital downloads. The song focuses on a boy unable to purchase a ticket to a sold-out rock concert. Listening from outside, he hears "one guitar" and has an epiphany, leading him to buy a guitar and learn to play it. He realizes that with the guitar he has a chance to achieve musical stardom. The song then goes on to describe the struggle he has to stay on top of the music charts, which makes him a "Juke Box Hero." He eventually encounters another fan outside the stage door at one of his concerts, who reminds him of himself and how it all began. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1vTZp1cqZE |

"Lips of an Angel" is a power ballad by American rock band Hinder. It was released as the second single from their album Extreme Behavior. It was their breakthrough hit, charting in the top ten on several Billboard trade charts in the United States, and reaching number one in several countries. It has sold 3.6 million copies in the US as of January 2015, making it one of the most downloaded rock songs.[2]
The lyrics deal with the singer describing his feelings when his favored girlfriend from his past calls late at night, somewhat pleasantly interrupting his current relationship. More than once, a reference to the call being secret is made, and the singer expresses concern of a fight ensuing as a result. The song concludes just as it began, with the singer questioning to why she is calling so late. However, at the end, it is less literal and more figurative, with the underlying meaning of "so late" not at night, but too late in life, perhaps adding an element of sadness to the song, as it ends with the plot unresolved. According to a radio interview done in Atlanta, Georgia the lyrics are loosely based on an actual phone call incident that did happen. "Welcome to the Jungle" is a song by American rock band Guns N' Roses, featured on their debut album, Appetite for Destruction (1987). It was released as the album's second single initially in the UK in September 1987 then again in October 1988 this time including the US, where it reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and number 24 on the UK Singles Chart.[3]
Axl Rose wrote the lyrics while visiting a friend in Seattle.[5] "It's a big city, but at the same time, it's still a small city compared to L.A. and the things that you're gonna learn. It seemed a lot more rural up there. I just wrote how it looked to me. If someone comes to town and they want to find something, they can find whatever they want."[6] Rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin summarises the song as "about Hollywood streets; true to life."[7] Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1tj2zJ2Wvg |

"Like a Rolling Stone" is a 1965 song by the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Its confrontational lyrics originated in an extended piece of verse Dylan wrote in June 1965, when he returned exhausted from a grueling tour of England. Dylan distilled this draft into four verses and a chorus. "Like a Rolling Stone" was recorded a few weeks later as part of the sessions for the forthcoming album Highway 61 Revisited.
During a difficult two-day preproduction, Dylan struggled to find the essence of the song, which was demoed without success in 3/4 time. A breakthrough was made when it was tried in a rock music format, and rookie session musician Al Kooper improvised the organ riff for which the track is known. However, Columbia Records was unhappy with both the song's length at over six minutes and its heavy electric sound, and was hesitant to release it. It was only when a month later a copy was leaked to a new popular music club and heard by influential DJs that the song was put out as a single. Although radio stations were reluctant to play such a long track, "Like a Rolling Stone" reached No. 2 in the US Billboard charts (No. 1 in Cashbox) and became a worldwide hit.
