After the Cambridge Analytica Episode, I came across a firefox plugin called Data Selfie by DATA X. Initially I thought it was crap but after 4 weeks of using it, the plugin is showing more and more data of my online habits. It is worth adding that I am not a regular user of facebook. I seldom comment or like anything and probably use Facebook for 15 min per day.
This is what the plugin tells me after monitoring my usage for 4 weeks:
1. I spend most of my time on news pages and on pages of a business I recently did some research on.
2. It tells me that I look at images of people most of the times, plus images of things I have been shopping for recently and images of the business I mentioned above.
3. Sentiment. I have a very negative sentiment of US but a very positive one towards Trump. Plus some info on Syria, Germany and NBC.
4. I have recently looked at content related to Unrest and War as well as family and children.
5. Personality: I am more conservative instead of liberal. Plus a few other personality traits that aren't of political nature, though still can be used to determine my political affiliations.
6. Religious orientation.
7. Political orientation: 32% cons and 40% liberal(though this doens't agree with 5)
8. There are some tabs on health and shopping though they aren't showing any data, probably because of my lack of use of facebook.
So if a girl developing a plugin can find out so much about me, imagine how easily facebook can profile me. Once you have data this much detailed about a person(the accuracy is debatable), imagine the power you have of controlling the population. If I was Zuckerberg, I'd be definitely selling this data for power and influence(not money coz i'll already have it)
My point of posting this was not to open a conspiracy theory about what Facebook does. My point is, once you have the ability to gather that much detailed info about people, why would you not use it to gain power and influence? If I can find out with people's browsing habits whether they are for or against Brexit for instance, and I then targeted those people with specific info whenever they are on my site, surely I'll be able to change their minds regarding their beliefs? If not all, then at least some of them? At the level Facebook plays, even influencing a fraction of users is a game changer.
Cambridge Analytica got caught. They did it by stealing the data. The ones that 'own' that data are and will continue doing what CA was doing. If they don't, then someone with enough power will force them to. There is a great tool out there and the people with power will try their best to use it, even if they seem to be grilling Zuckerberg for it at the moment. Deep inside, we all would love to own something so powerful.

It could be handy to open a browser tab for stuff you're not really interested in.
I'm going to view material on combine harvesters and sheepdog trials and then other random pointless stuff. How are they then going to know what you're really interested in, take that you stinking rich ****s.

I was thinking last week of just saying something random, not over the phone but in earshot of my mobile and see if I'd suddenly start seeing adverts etc related to it. Maybe speak about getting a toaster or something and see if Amazon start showing up with them in pop-ups.
Scary how one interaction on something can lead to being bombarded with it for weeks afterwards.

@northanlite here is what facebook knows about me.........fark all, never signed up Zuckerberg said this week to congress: 'Yes we do collect data of people who have not signed up for Facebook'
I'm not sure how they do that. Maybe if someone has used your machine to login? because otherwise they can't have cookies on your machine.
It again strengthens my belief that in today's world, if you 'can' so something that benefits someone powerful, you will have to do it, whether by choice or by force. Its similar to the argument that a govt spies on its citizens. If they can do it and see a benefit, why would they not do it? Just because something is immoral or illegal has never been a deterrent.

I let a mate of mine use my laptop earlier. Now there are adverts all over the place on different sites I use for the stuff he was looking up.
Hopefully a quick CClean will stop that.
Smart Phones are no longer phones, they are just an extra computer for everyone and they're mostly used as a device for big organisations to get whatever money people have.
It's why Facebook and Google et al can keep affording billions of £ to purchase each other. Thus keeping much of the world's money, whilst everything else goes up shizen strasse
