two words that both have a story attached to them.
1=a very small word that can stop a world war its called "SORRY" But most people never use it when the should, and others cant use it for some reason.
2=a word that is very seldom used but it can move a mountain.its called " THANKS"
BUT both words are in the top ten of the most famous words since time began.[][]

A very small word that no one understands.  GOD.  Thousands of different understandings of a word that only exists in one's imagination.

Fair point but where and how did humans or any living being 'get created'...? Was it a god, whatever that is?

won me a few points in quizzes over the years, as did pointillism.
Report Des Pond • April 14, 2018 3:39 PM BST
dendro means trees usually, so I'm guessing it is estimating the age of trees.
Report Des Pond • April 14, 2018 3:41 PM BST
"propinquity" is a good one. Not a particularly big word, but very few people have heard of it.

Someone on here a few years ago had a go at me for "using big words" because I'd asked if what they'd said was a euphemism.Crazy
Report northanlite • April 15, 2018 7:53 AM BST
various sports broadcasters are always hilarious with their attempts at "big words"
Glenn Hoddle thinks he's an intellectualist Silly

the word democracy is a word that no one seems to understand

I have tried to explain it occasionally without success
Report lfc1971 • April 15, 2018 8:05 AM BST
her we go, the more democratic a country is the less need there is to vote

you don't understand that do you?

yes northanlite, sanctimonious is a word that people don't understand :)
Report lfc1971 • April 15, 2018 9:13 AM BST
big words are almost without exception easy to understand
it is the small words such as Affect and Effect that are difficult
Report northanlite • April 15, 2018 9:19 AM BST
^ nobody gets that. in most cases the effect of affect has the same affect as effect Silly
Report northanlite • April 15, 2018 9:21 AM BST
i think it's affect if it is a physical thing doing it. A train has an affect, words have an effect.
or is it the opposite Plain

You effect a change (i.e. cause a change).

A change affects you (i.e. you experience the effect of a change.

An affect is a rare (and rather pointless) term in psychology to describe an emotion.

not a long word but one of the most used, irratating   words used especially by very young people is surreal, anything and everything is so  surreal these days
Report northanlite • April 15, 2018 11:13 AM BST
the most misused term in a sporting context (and others) is "average"
it gets used in a disparaging way but surely it is neither one nor t'other Happy
