I know of a plant called saxifrage which probably comes from the same root.

two words that both have a story attached to them.
1=a very small word that can stop a world war its called "SORRY" But most people never use it when the should,and others cant use it for some reason.
2=a word that is very seldom used but it can move a mountain.its called " THANKS"
BUT both words are in the top ten of the most famous words since time began.[::][::]

A very small word that no one understands.  GOD.  Thousands of different understandings of a word that only exists in one's imagination.

dendro means trees usually, so I'm guessing it is estimating the age of trees.

"propinquity" is a good one. Not a particularly big word, but very few people have heard of it.

Someone on here a few years ago had a go at me for "using big words" because I'd asked if what they'd said was a euphemism.

big words are almost without exception easy to understand
it is the small words such as Affect and Effect that are difficult

^ nobody gets that. in most cases the effect of affect has the same affect as effect

i think it's affect if it is a physical thing doing it. A train has an affect, words have an effect.
or is it the opposite

An affect is a rare (and rather pointless) term in psychology to describe an emotion.

not a long word but one of the most used,irratating   words used especially by very young people is surreal,anything and everything is so  surreal these days

the most misused term in a sporting context (and others) is "average"
it gets used in a disparaging way but surely it is neither one nor t'other
