Don’t forget chianti which came in a wicker basket.

Niersteiner,a medium slightly sweet white German wine, very popular in the early 80's.
Report blackbarn March 23, 2018 9:47 PM GMT
Glasgow - Mateus Blanc is available at most of the French destination ports supermarkets, it is about £2.70 a bottle.
Report blackbarn March 23, 2018 9:54 PM GMT
Slippy - Nierstein/Niersteiner is a minefield.

The former is a famous wine town renowned for its very fine rieslings. The latter is/was an abomination notorious for Niersteiner gutes domtal which I think is what you had in mind.

Yes blackbarn, that's what was on my mind.

Showing up with a 'Party Seven' immediately gave you VIP status and if you could open one without re-decorating the room (with the free can opener) you achieved what was akin to de-fusing an unexploded forty pounder. Cool

The French adore 'Le Piat D'Or' as the old TV advert said!

The French have never heard of 'Le Piat D'Or'. FACT!

Anyone seen these cheapo wines scudding around in boxes on the floors of lidl and aldi(not that I ever deal with these paragons of fine grocery provision).  A couple of quid a bottle with the alcoholic content of tizer!!! (or something)
Amazing scenes.
Moving on  -   seeing cooper's post (I remember those 7 pinters with the explosive results)
Suddenly I have a flash back and bizarre link to    -   The piat to blast through a door

sorry I really get back on my medication

Blue Nun ashley did a decent Riesling so there!
Report blackbarn March 27, 2018 3:28 PM BST
Whispering - The standard Blue Nun has never been a Riesling (grape).

Until the mid 90's it was predominantly Muller Thurgau grape, they then upped the quality by including 30% Riesling. The predominant grape in Blue Nun today is Rivaner.  Never heard of it?....guess what it is the new name for Muller Thurgau.   Nothing wrong with Muller-Thurgau mind, my neighbour makes a brilliant English white with it as part of a blend.
Report Whisperingdeath March 27, 2018 3:38 PM BST
I know the 70's Blue Nun was not a riesling. But that is all I know except the riesling is ok. I don't know anything about grapes except I like them! Chianti in a wicker basket is ok. I have been to Tuscanny and seen how they load a cart with hundreds of bottles of it although to be fair it is more impressive than the wineShocked

My parents would drink Mateus Rose, Black Tower and Blue Nun in the 70's. This was before English people ate garlic or quiche so they are not entirely to blame. It might be said they were radicals ( that would horrify them! ). We even made table lamps out of the bottles! I might even go and see if there are any still in operation!

Whispering - Blue Nun/Sichel do NOT make a "Riesling" and as far as I know never have.  Riesling is certainly OK. It is arguably the greatest white wine grape in the world and is used in Germany and elsewhere to make some of the finest white wines. I have to say that your knowledge of Tuscan wine seems to be on a par with your knowledge of Blue NunWink

Mrs 'Death has relatives outside Firenze. They own the family vinyard and olive grove. I have to say after about 5 small glasses ( this is Italy ) the wine stops tasting of vinegar and starts tasting like nectar!

As you know Blackbarn a nice Chianti goes well with fava beans and liver!

BLUE NUN
RIESLING
The purest expression of this variety is found in Germany. This German Riesling combines notes of grapefruit, peach and lavender with an exciting yet harmonious palate.

Blue Nun RIESLING can be enjoyed with grilled dishes and pairs exceptionally well to Asian cuisine due to it’s clean and crisp finish.
Report blackbarn March 27, 2018 7:10 PM BST
Whispering - Well I never!   You are right and I am wrong.  Blue Nun now make a 100% Riesling.  Apologies.    I will splash out on a bottle.

Tesco are operating their 25% off promotion until April 3. Almost cancels out the 30-40% price hikes on the French whites over the past year or so.

We are very cosmopolitan in Kent. We hate everybody but drink their wine and shag their women!

I remember once there was an office party. We ate and drank and the usual suspects ( low achievers remained ) Of course we did not want to go but needed more booze. One of the young lads said I think my dad has got a bottle of wine in his office, I'll go and get it. Excitement abounded till he came back with a bottle of Blue Nun! We all made our excuses and left.

One chap said if I had a party and someone came to my front door with a bottle of Blue Nun I'd tell him to fcek off! Couldn't agree more but then they introduced the Riesling and I thought it would be fun to take it to parties and see what the reaction was and then see what happened when people ashley tasted it.
